Employee in the store called the police because I was in the store with my service dog. She threatened me and told me I needed to leave. After I explained to her that she is my service dog because I have a disability and the ADA provides her every right to be in the establishment with me, she told me to "prove it". I told her she isn't allowed to ask me that and asked if she knew the only two questions they're allowed to ask me under the ADA protected rights. She huffed and said "I'm calling the police." Absolutely rude and disappointing an establishment would treat someone with a disability in this manner.
UPDATE - Since the owner has responded, I wanted to point out a few things wrong here. I'm not sure what Colorado law the owner is referring to, but an establishment is required to provide reasonable accommodations to a disabled individual utilizing a service animal. These rights are protected by a federal law under Americans with Disabilities Act Titles II & III.
Silverton Grocery is not allowed to ask for documentation or demonstration. Not all service animals are bought from a training organization, they're also protected under the ADA rights to be personally trained by the owner for specific tasks. The ADA rights also only permit an establishment to ask two questions: 1) is it a service animal, and 2) what task does the service animal provide.
Service animal documentation by federal law is not required. Unfortunately, this is marred by certain individuals that may or may not have paid a small fee for a piece of paper stating their animal is a "service animal" to bypass actual qualifications for having the right to utilize a service animal. Any request for documentation can only be asked for an employment opportunity, and even then, under ADA Title I, this documentation has nothing to do with the actual service animal itself.
I thought, at the time, it was moot when the employee also stated "I can't tell it is a service dog" and I didn't mention it in the original review as I got my actual point across anyway, but the ADA rights also do not require a service animal to be badged, vested, labeled, or identified with any kind of label. It is a COURTESY to people and establishments everywhere that they're badged/labeled as such. My dog was wearing a two-inch-wide black collar with bright red letters that said, "SERVICE DOG".
Even if there is a Colorado state law requiring documentation, I didn't go to law school but I'm pretty sure a federal law trumps a state law in...
Read moreThis store takes advantage of being the only place in town to buy groceries, and it is about an hour to Albertsons or Walmart. I understand there is not going to be the same deals that you can find at a chain, but this store price gouges and calls it "import pricing". To me, it sounds more like he bought the groceries full price in the neighboring town and is reselling them at astronomical prices. At Kroger, you can buy 10 patties for $10 of fresh hamburger meat. This store just sold me four packages of four patties at almost 14 bucks a package and the meat was so freezer burned that it was almost inedible. Each patty was around $3.50 as opposed to the $1 they should retail for. Again, I expect things to cost a little bit more here, and I wouldn't mind paying $2.50 a patty if the meat was at least in good shape. The frozen Stouffers enchiladas were about $27 in this store. It's incredible. Don't waste your money on this place. It's worth the 2 hour drive round trip to get quality food at...
Read moreI purchased a visa gift card and loaded it with $320 at this store. I loaded $100 cash and $220 from my debit card. I purchased the card to pay for my daughter's childcare in a single form of payment. Unfortunately shortly after arriving home I found out the card was compromised and all the money was already stolen . I called the store to let them know hoping they take responsibility for the bad merchandise and offer a refund.....nope the owner acted sympathetic but pushed it off onto the gift card company. I think it's unacceptable as a business you are responsible for everything sold in your store and should stand behind it. You'd think at the least a honorable establishment with integrity would offer some type of refund, at least %50 would be better than nothing when they even admitted someone serviced their visa giftcard rack and perhaps had something to do with it. Regardless as a business they should've made it right. I'll never give this store another penny of my hard...
