Shopping here, you’re buying local, supporting our local economy, helping support people who make their living creatively, AND getting unique items you won’t find anywhere else.

In addition, the building is an old drugstore that has been lovingly restored with its original floors and brickwork still on display. All in all, well worth a visit if you’re in the area, and in my opinion one of the highlights of our little town.

The Fragrant Mushroom is a must-visit for a small town like Sparta. The front gallery is no longer open but park in the church lot behind the building on Rhea Street and walk down the alley to where the store has been combined with the studio. All the pottery is handmade and wheel-thrown right there. You can often see the artists at work. While they do not have lessons, that's where I learned pottery myself and do work there occasionally, in the interest of honest disclosure, but I stand by the 5 star review. You won't find lower priced handmade, quality pottery. It is microwave and dishwasher...

OK, so we went in expecting some kind of head shop from the 60's...the name doesn't exactly fit the category of the store, which features a vast selection of hand-crafted pottery mugs and original art created by local artists. The mugs are excellent quality, signed by the artist, and the variety of available glazes is really quite good. Be ready to be greeted by the sweetest (and very agile) Calico cat when you come in. We enjoyed browsing around; I love seeing the arts represented in Sparta and I hope the town continues to host creative events and...
