As a frequent shopper at target, I can’t believe the treatment my family received here. My sister sent my 10 year old niece to the dressing room, to try on 2 pairs of jeans she was excited to get for the upcoming school year. About 3 mins later we arrived to the dressing room behind my niece, and found her Coach crossbody bag that was about 12x5inches laying on the table outside the dressing room unattended, with her wallet and phone inside. We have always instilled into my niece always keep your purse with you. After noticing my niece bag we quickly grabbed it. Autumn the store associate walked back to the dressing room about 2 mins after we were standing there. Autumn stated, “due to the store policy I told her to leave her bag on the floor outside the dressing room or on the table in front of the dressing room.” We requested to see the store policy, as the return policy, and the number of items allowed in the dressing room are posted why wasn’t this “new” policy posted as well. If this were the new policy, why is there no store associate watching purses, while guest are trying on clothes? As we stood there waiting for my niece to come out of the dressing room several women with larger purses were allowed into the dressing room, yet my 10 year old African American niece was targeted and stereotyped to remove her bag. After speaking with Autumn we requested to speak with the store manager at the time. Autumn and her coworkers gathered together to discuss the incident as we asked several times to speak with the store manager. Finally, Owen whom stated he was the manager of the evening arrived to speak to us. We explained the issue to Owen that continued to say it was the store policy with no written documentation, and Autumn was new and wasn’t properly trained. As we stood there speaking with Owen several other women were allowed into the dressing room, not one was requested to remove their purse to leave on the table unattended. Owen was unable to answer the question as to why my African American niece was targeted and stereotyped to remove her crossbody bag, and no other women were told to remove their purses. I am extremely dissatisfied with the racism that occurred at this store. My niece suffers from severe anxiety and now dressing rooms...
