Our son began his piano education at a fine Minneapolis school, when he was 2, under the advice of several people who'd met him. Parentally, we thought we were nuts. But after 18 months, even the wonderful teacher we had there suggested that it was time for The Next Level. After meeting with a few teachers at that next level - and that is select company - we decided upon Dr. Paul Wirth, in large part because of his artful combination of discipline, expertise, and jocularity. That last aspect cannot be understated: place a child under the tutelage of a brilliant but Dickensian taskmaster, and they'll hate piano forever, and might form some regrettable memories of you while they're at it. Paul has an unsurpassable grasp of when to joke around, and when to apply pressure, gentle or less so. Not all students will stick with the pedagogy - but if they do, they will succeed, and that is everything one can ask of a teacher. I'd also like to add that in the process of Noah's piano education, we've been introduced to quite a lot of wonderful music, and gotten to know it in ways we never imagined (neither of us parents are musicians.) So, done well, the Wirth Center enriches the lives of the entire family. It's been one of the best decisions we've...
Read moreAs a child, I was forced to take piano growing up and "no" - I don't wish I would have stayed with it. But I will say that it is quite moving to watch my son enjoy taking piano. He's certainly not going to be the next Mozart of Philip Glass, but he is enjoying it and his instructor seems to have a very good understanding of how to adapt his teaching style to be age-appropriate as our son grows. They have musicales every month or so and they are mini recitals which are done in the evening (optional but no additional cost). The way they are run allows the kids to get to know some of the other kids and see what the other children are performing and it also helps them build confidence in performing in front of others. Atmosphere is really healthy and the other children I've observed have all been respectful and have set good examples as we hope and feel our son reciprocates. They have plenty of instructors to choose from and will assist newcomers in finding the right instructor. It's just a positive place all around. And I might even be learning a thing or two... but don't think I'll admit that to...
Read moreAs a vocal major in college & formerly a professional musician, I'm pretty good at being able to tell when a teacher or school is all talk or the "real-deal." The question I always ask is, "what are their students doing now? Are they working? What are they capable of?" etc. The students I've met & seen perform at the Wirth Center REALLY took me by surprise - the technique, the passion, the dedication - & coming from students who are under 10! Plus, a couple of seasons ago when The Juilliard School in NYC accepted 25 students into their piano program, 12 were incoming freshmen (the rest transfers), TWO were students of the Wirth Center! When I heard that, I knew I wanted my kids studying here, & that Central MN has a true gem. Needless to day, I'm a big fan! ...
