Godmothers is a nice little boutique bookstore in the quaint town of Summerland. Style and aesthetic fit well with other businesses in this little seaside town south of Santa Barbara and north of Carpinteria. The decor style is well done and feels warm without feeling cluttered. The selection of books feels more curated than comprehensive; obviously this is not a Barnes & Noble with a vast selection of books. Still, there are a variety of sections ranging from children’s, self improvement, fiction, biographies, and so on. There’s also a nice little selection of rare and/or signed books, some of which are priced at several hundred dollars a copy (such as a copy of Truman Capote’s ā€œIn Cold Bloodā€œ). There was no event or reading when I visited but there’s clearly a space to accommodate such an event including lighting, audio, and a slightly raised albeit small stage. If you’re in the area it’s certainly worth dropping in to take a look.

What a lovely respite just off the freeway...nothing less than you would expect in this town. Get a coffee at the airstream that feels like fancy pop-up cafe in the California sun. Browse out of print collectable hardback books and a really nice selection of current books. Now, to be sure, it isn't Powell's bookstore(nothing compares there, right? You know if you know), but this makes it into my top five bookstores and one of mine is crafted and lives in a work of fiction. Anyway, worth a stop. Check out their website for book readings and events!

What a wonderful place to stop in on our way to the Central Coast! We were looking for a place to eat in Summerland and noticed the patio dining area so we stopped there and discovered that it is part of a lovely two-story bookstore. Kudos to the design team… the ambiance is so welcoming that you just want to stay awhile. My husband had the muffuletta sandwich and devoured it all in spite of its large size, and I was quite happy and impressed with the chicken Caesar salad. Of course I found a book for myself as well as a book to gift. This bookstore is a destination...

Although its pricey, visit the shop! Go for the ambience and buy something you wouldn’t normally! The concept and execution is absolutely brilliant. I love it all. I first patronized the shop with a good friend who is crazy about it. It was freezing cold the day we visited and we found it welcoming. Be forewarned some things are pricy. I did purchase a vintage book, ā€˜How to be a Party Girl’ by Pat Montandon for $125. It is absolutely my fault for not doing my due diligence on the title, but upon returning home, I was able to purchase the title, signed by the...
