I tend to go at night. It's mellow, but not what you'd call helpful or friendly. I have tried being polite, but I think it actually annoys the staff; I end up feeling foolish, so I don't talk to anyone when I go in anymore.
An example of the lack of helpfulness: I was looking for an item. I was told the only place I could get it was at Tops. It was out of stock. It was the sole reason for my presence in the store. I got mad and left, accidentally leaving a cold bag and ice pack behind. I called when I realized my mistake. I asked the service desk employee to check for it, saying I'd be back soon. I initially told him one area to look in, and corrected myself. He left the phone for maybe 30 seconds, and came back saying he had checked all around. He said that someone must have walked off with it, said "Bye" and hung up. I had not had a chance to say anything since he got back to the phone.
Immediately, I came directly back from the other store. The bag and ice pack were exactly where I had left them. I tried to talk to the kid. By then the service desk was closed, and no managers were anywhere in sight. So, strike one, item out of stock. Strike two, the kid clearly didn't really look for the item, and hung up on me. Strike three, no manager in evidence, and no one picked up the phone when I called, (called back twice, letting it ring ten times.) I tried to deal with them directly.
Even before this, I would never have done a full grocery shop here. Tops is BY FAR the most expensive grocery store in Syracuse, and at Nottingham Rd., the prices are halfway between a grocery store and a convenience store, probably because it's close to South Campus (the most expensive SU housing). I do not buy soda here, frozen foods, toiletries, cat supplies, or cleaning supplies because of the prices.
Oddly enough, food prepared on the premises is fairly priced. You can get a salad big enough for two meals for about $7. There are also things to take home and heat up which are a fairly good deal. The store-made bakery is quite good.
Still, I only get there what I can't get elsewhere because of the prices. I'm sure the prices decrease their in store traffic. The night staff doesn't...
Read moreI âm absolutely baffled by the prices at Tops. They charge the same price for orange juice that isnât even 100% juice as other stores charge for actual 100% orange juice. Itâs absurd! This kind of pricing isnât just highâitâs downright insulting.
And itâs not just the orange juice. Everything in this store is marked up to ridiculous levels. Items that are reasonably priced at Wegmans, Walmart, or Price Chopper are astronomically more expensive here. Even their so-called âsalesâ are laughable compared to what youâd pay elsewhere.
I donât know how Tops justifies these prices, but I know one thing: I wonât be back. If you care about your budget, do yourself a favor and shop somewhere else. Tops is just not worth it. Check out the fotos polish sausage goes for 3 to $4 every where else see how much they charge and milk goes for 3 to 4 every where else yet they charge almost double the OJ is gross not 100% kids wanted nothing to do with it yet they charge what Wegmans charges for the Real thing seriously what a huge disappointment and check out cream cheese prices insulting no other store charges this much pure highway robbery taking advantage of the college students and the community so wrong! OJ beverage is only 42% juice what trash lol shameless!!! I really hope the store doesnât respond to this with some kind of an excuse they will just be digging a hole for themselves just do the right thing and charge what is in the best interests of the customer and not your bottom line self serving much!!!!??? Iâd...
Read moreThe worst place anyone can shop...services are not available, cashiers are rude, you have to bag your items sometimes, fruits and vegetables are not fresh, at times we found mold on them the very next day, they close the deli down hours before the posted times, often when you walk in you will see staff talking or texting, ignoring the customers. The managers are often hidden in their offices and I have spoken directly to all of then...they always say they understand but blame the staff...since this lack of service has been going on so long, i now believe it is their fault...the staff only gets away with what the boss allows them to. The last time I was there I used the bathroom. ..there was no toilet paper, no soap, the perimeter of the floor had black mold around it, and apparently smelled so bad that the staff's reaction was to hang a bag of pinecones scented with cinnamon. The only bright light is George in the deli...he always says hello, is positive, and professional. I will never ever ever go into this Nottingham Plaza store, but this now has expanded to all of Top's stores, I am like many of the neighbors, I will definitely travel miles and give thousands of dollars to wegmans, aldis, or price chopper. I want to reiterate that I have tried to talk about what is so upsetting to our...
