My 3 children just spent their first summer at Mohawk Day Camp and they can’t wait to go back next summer. Sending them there was, without a doubt, one of the best decisions I’ve made as a parent. After my 10-year-old daughter’s challenging school year dealing with bullies, she made so many new friends at camp that she adored and felt comfortable trying new things with (rock wall climbing, the flying squirrel, and the high ropes course just to name a few). Her self-confidence skyrocketed and she can’t wait to add on the 1-week sleep-away option that’s offered by the camp next summer so she can go away with all of her new camp friends. She also loved the ability to build her own weekly schedule by selecting activities that she was the most interested in for her choice and elective periods. It definitely made her feel more independent and “like an adult” as she says, being able to spend more time doing the activities that she loves. My 6-year-old son who had no interest in sports prior to camp found his love for tennis (which we never would have thought of trying on our own) and he was so excited to work towards reaching new swimming levels. He would come home grinning from ear-to-ear each time he received his light-up card showing that he moved up. My son can also be very emotional at times and Amanda was a miracle worker. She found the best ways to help my son regulate how he was feeling and keep the fun going. My 3-year-old daughter began camp with a speech delay and ended camp talking non-stop despite her lapse in services over the summer. She came home singing so many cute songs (she’s still singing the watermelon song on a daily basis), and was so excited to tell me about what she did at camp that it definitely motivated her to try harder to formulate full sentences. And I know that my youngest is very strong-willed and can be very stubborn at times but her counselors were so patient with her all summer long. Not only was I receiving daily pics via the Mohawk App, but Valerin always made sure to communicate how my daughter’s day went which made me feel much more comfortable with her being there for full days at such a young age. Valerin also never gave up when my daughter refused instructional swim and would only participate during recreational (she was so used to just playing in pools prior to camp and definitely put up a fight at first). Valerin had the whole group cheering my daughter on and getting her excited to practice different swimming skills. The day she received her first moving up card, I actually found her hugging it in her sleep after she went to bed which was the cutest thing. She was so proud of herself.
Bottom line, if you want the absolute best summer experience for your child then send them to Mohawk! Between the endless daily activities, the awesome special events, and the phenomenal staff, your kids will have the time of their life! I couldn’t be happier with my decision to send my kids there this summer and they all can't...
Read moreI have been attending camp mohawk for about 8 years. Last year was by far the worst experience I have ever had at Mohawk. A mentally challenged camper was allowed in our group with no accompaniment of an aid and he would constantly attack and chase other campers. When counselors were informed of the situation or saw, the most that happened was an ineffective call home to parents or a sit down with the head counselor. After putting up with him for weeks, a few friends reached out to office staff with little responsiveness. I would not blame Mohawk for unknowingly bringing an aggressive kid into our group, but the lack of action from the whole team, counselor or office is what really told me. Our head counselor, Gustavo, would always be yelling “Quiet!” or “Single file line!” which was very suppressive considering that we were at summer camp and supposed to have time to socialize and freedom of speech. After multiple complaints to Camp Mohawk, I was devastated to hear that Gustavo and the other counselors would still be at camp mohawk with no extra training or demonstration on how they should be treating group members. The division director of Mohawk Senior Camp, Seth, would constantly be following our group and talking to kids about anything happening left and right. Even with the constant and unnecessary interference of one person Mohawk Administration, the problem with counselors and troublesome campers was not fixed. This year, the camp has slightly redeemed itself, for one, Mohawk, after shifting priority to the younger kids and appeasing the younger ages, has turned back some attention to senior camp and has created a strong system of options and electives. Another thing is that my counselors personally are better this year and more accommodating. One thing I’ve disliked, along with other campers is that the theme of Native American has disappeared under new management. I am unaware about whether or not camp mohawk came under fire from the Native American community and was pressured to change its theme, but we used to have them visit and perform ceremonies/events for the camp and show us some of their culture. The group names also used to be like Iroquois or Tuscarora, but now they have been changed to less engaging names like Trailblazers 1 or Explorers 3. Overall, Mohawk has slightly began to redeem itself and I’ll give it credit for that, but right now it’s not checking all the boxes for most people I know and myself. If you are interested in sending a child to Mohawk, please go to orientation day and tour the camp before making any major decisions. I suggest only going half a season (4...
Read moreMy children have spent two summers at Camp Mohawk and both experiences were absolutely phenomenal! I found the counselors to be warm, attentive, responsive, responsible, and a lot of fun. The Director is excellent - accessible and very helpful, and just a super nice guy. I was really impressed that he knew my kids by name, considering how big the camp is. They have an extraordinary range of activities - ranging from water activities to art, sports, music, etc. The activities are fun and creative and new things were added both summers. The facilities are beautiful, clean and well maintained. For my daughter (she was going in to 4th and 5th grades), the schedule is set for the campers in the morning. Then after lunch, they have an "option" period and an "elective" period. She got to choose these two activities from an amazing list of options and they changed weekly. The communication is extraordinary - they have an app, Mohawk 360, where you can text anyone who you need (Director, bus counselor, head counselor, swim teacher, etc.) and the response time was excellent. The head counselor posts pictures on the app so you can see what your kids are doing. I found the bus counselors to be great and the bus drivers to be safe and professional. I can't say enough positive things - I could go on and on and on. My kids are both returning for summer 2020 and are...
