Peters Market, long the cornerstone font for victuals along the Ellenville end of the ancient Old Mine Road; but alas, now fast falling under the subsuming shadow of the rapidly rising Walmart Supercenter, Napanoch's "New Colussus," where Wawarsing Town's honest yeomanry soon will flock; & then, at long last, be able to stock their larder for prices finally favorable to the struggles of hard-put working class folk, whom, with their nigh-on to heroic endeavors, strive only to bring food to the table & feed their brood. Pray tell, is this not our American birthright? If nothing else!? Well, not according to 'Squire Peters,' as young Jeremy sees things quite differently. His 'Shawangunk serfs' should simply do his bidding, & without a whimper, if you please; whether working in his eponymous market or shopping in the latter, & truth be told, you'll be had either way. But, is he not 'The Lord of the Manor'? Such as it is. Enough said? No! Did not the ShopRrite 'subbatical' find Peters' prices suddenly surcharged, shall we say? A bit queer, one would think, especially after decades of steadfast local loyalty. But apparently, that counts for naught these days. It's simply the way of the world; "The World according to Jeremy Peters," that is. So then, shop if you will, where the Old Mine Road meets that back street, gas light lane leading to The Haunted Shanley, standing as mute sentinel for the specters dwelling within. But therein lie, at least, the shades of honest Ulsterites.
Jeremy Peters, the proprietor, refused to refund my $75 for two putrid filet mignon sleeves just recently purchased from his meat bin; although his butcher had taken them back from me in Peters' absence, telling me to return when the boss was in for my money, then explained how bacteria sometimes infects meat prior to kryopacking, etc. So I sued them at the Court of Small Claims in Ellenville, but needless to say they won; with a wink and a nod from the sitting judge to the senior Peters. Their lanky lawyer seemed to have stepped right out of the iconic Hank Ketcham cartoon, he was the living image of Dennis' father. But hardly the Catskill Clarence Darrow. However, for only $25 I had had my day in court; all alone with my humble but forthright Anglo-Saxon screed against their lanky lawyer's Latinate legalisms; my loss was a well-fought defeat, but that sickeningly sweet, septum-searing scent from the Peters Market moldering meat is still with me. Almost incarnate, if you will. So,...
Read moreThis place is needed if only to give competition to larger stores and keep prices down, but I can't get on board with the lack of care when it comes to collection curation. They seem to just gather whatever they can find rather than curating their products carefully. I can get Hamburger Helper at Walmart. I'm certainly not going to pay three times as much for it at Peter's. I can get cheddar anywhere. Why not carry cheeses that are not available elsewhere (like hallumi)? I want more specialty products in a more organized environment. Forget the deli! I can get deep fried meats anywhere. How about a carefully planned menu with some vegetarian and gluten-free options? And, please! train the deli staff to move. It takes almost a half hour to get one breakfast sandwich here even when no one else is in line. I don't get it. The staff is nice, and this place is slightly better than Tops, but they really...
Read moreThe deli has fallen way off it seems like only 1 or 2 people there know how to make a sandwich. everyone else seems to either purposely do something wrong because there mad you asked them to work or they truly can't make a sandwich. Today i got a sandwich and they thin slice the cheese and like as thin as the slicer will go and then proceed to only put 1 slice across the sandwich just enough to cover the meat literally like there wasn't even cheese on the sandwich. How hard is it to make a sandwich every time they do something like this. Things cost to much in the current economy every eating out is truly a financial decision and I am tired of throwing money away at this place I will never...
