On Aug 9th, I went to purchase several drinks for a celebratory event with friends and family. An elderly gentleman watched me with suspicion, making me extremely uncomfortable. Despite this, I continued shopping and went to the register to check out. He scanned all the items, still radiating that suspicious energy.
When it was time to pay, he asked for my ID. I was initially flattered, assuming he was verifying my age—I'm in my 40s, so obviously not underage. I presented my ID, but instead of verifying my age, he placed it on the counter and used his personal phone to take photos of it. That’s when I confirmed his suspicious demeanor. He assumed I was buying a large number of items because I had stolen the credit card.
I don't understand why anyone would take photos of a customer’s ID with their personal phone unless they suspected foul play. I’ve been shopping here for years and have never been asked for my ID. I confronted him, but he played dumb. I left the items, took my Amex and ID, and went to a store that doesn’t racially profile its customers. My ID was not requested at the next liquor store.
This experience was shameful, and I will never shop there again. I have escalated the matter to my lawyer and am exploring my options. The owner should review videos from 09 or 10 Aug to see this...
