After graduating high school at the top of my class, I was absolutely DEVASTATED when I wasn't able to attend CSU Monterey Bay. I worked so damn hard just to get accepted into an university that its not even funny, but atlas, my mother was ill and needed me. Unlike most of the people I know (whose only goal in life is to sit at home playing video games till the end of time) I "opted" out to attend VVC. Still depressed over the university debacle, I became apprehensive when I enrolled myself to VVC. I heard stories from my high school teachers about how bad this community college was and how I should "steer clear" from it. I have also read multiple irate reviews from the internet about this college, so I wasn't exactly "tickled pink" about the idea of attending VVC. Well, say one thing about VVC: it's not as bad as people make it out to be. YES, admissions staff and the financial aid department are vexatious, and YES, there are some unpleasant people who go here (but I've visited many community colleges throughout the state, and let me tell you; I've found that 90% of the colleges I visited contained "unpleasant" people). I've never had a problem with the fees, so I'm not too sure what the fuss is all about. All the professor's I've had were extremely helpful, especially Richard Cerrto (the man went out of his way to make sure that I got a cheap Anthropology textbook, who does that?). I am a nursing major and found ALL of the science classes up to par (all of my biology professor's were passionate about their jobs and actually wanted students to succeed). My GPA is a 3.8 and have kept it that way for a while now. Why mention that? Excluding the six people I know here, a lot of people (not ALL) seem to be lazy and blames the school for their failures. You're telling me that religious studies is hard? Try taking microbiology with an additional 14 units while caring for your loved ones, we'll see which one is harder.
I originally wanted to register for their nursing program but the waitlist is ridiculous, so I plan on transferring after this upcoming semester to CSU San Bernardino to finally pursue my Bachelor's in nursing. It's not Monterey, but San Bernardino was my third pick. In the end, I've had an enjoyable experience here. PROS: the professors, the campus, the science department, and believe it or not, the bookstore. CONS: Admissions/financial aid staff, and the students (not ALL, but SOME). If you're like me or someone looking for something cheaper than a university and live in the high desert, and is actually SERIOUS about their education, VVC is for you. If you're still living in high school and could give two "you-know-whats" about your education and just want to come here to take up space and "hang" with your friends, then this place is for you, just stay the hell out of the way for people who are serious about...
Read moreMy time at Victor Valley College (VVC) has been incredibly frustrating and disappointing, primarily due to the unprofessional and unhelpful staff, particularly within the student services and help center. The issues I've encountered highlight a serious lack of student support and accountability. On one occasion, while waiting for student services, a staff member arrived late, appeared sleepy, and failed to activate the ticketing tablet, despite only one student (myself) waiting. Despite her error, she became anger with me, demonstrating a concerning lack of professionalism and an unwillingness to acknowledge her own mistakes. It seems many staff members are quick to hide their mistakes, and there's a troubling silence surrounding these issues. Beyond this individual incident, it's clear that most students struggle to access resources. There appears to be a system where certain individuals or groups are favored, leading to unequal access to scholarships, educational opportunities, and financial aid. It feels as though only a small percentage of students truly benefit from the resources available, raising questions about the fair distribution of government funding. The college desperately needs an investigation into these practices. The counselors and staff at the help center are not only unhelpful Seeking guidance often results in condescending attitudes, which is disheartening when students are simply trying to navigate their academic journey. Their role should be to support, not belittle. This indifference and unwillingness to assist significantly add to the already stressful experience of college. Furthermore, the lack of clear guidance and resources for critical processes like college registration is a major concern. While I don't recommend VVC based on my experience, I understand that for many who live in the area, it may feel like the only option due to travel constraints. However, the college's current state suggests it is wasting government resources by failing to adequately serve its student population. I sincerely hope Victor Valley College takes this feedback seriously and implements significant changes to foster a truly supportive, professional, and student-centric...
Read moreI enjoy my school. But I did not enjoy how I was treated in the writing center. I printed out an important paper and had the running head of my apa paper not show up, took a breath and (talking to myself) whispered a "ah man." I went to speak with one of my friends to tell her why I had such disappointment, and the head of the writing center said "Um it's because you printed it WRONG. It is common sense to put it on word. How could you not know that." And proceeded to make me feel like an idiot. Let's get something straight, I have not had experience with computers until college. It was kinda rude, especially since I was not even talking to her at all. I had my back towards her. 10 minutes later I reprinted my essay and was satisfied with how it was printed. A page was left behind from another student and I picked it up and said "Hm I wonder who's this is." Then the lady comes back and says "Where is your id." And I said oh it must be with my things as I take a grasp to see that the paper was mine from my first attempt at printing my paper. She snatched the paper from my hand, slammed it on the table, and said. "I SAID, WHERE IS YOUR ID. WHERE IS IT." And i looked at her confused and said "uh, with my other stuff?" And I went to look for it, but it was not there. She said "Yeah, I thought so." She stormed off and gave me my id back. I was confused on why that played out the way it did, it was quite unnecessary. Why didn't she just give it back to me? Will never go to the writing center again lol. Other than that, Professor Francev is great! I also love the library. The staff there is the best and super nice! Ladies at the counselling office are rude and never want to help you. They never answer...
