This is one of the best outdoor spots in the DMV. Gravelly Point is truly unique — where else can you lay out a picnic while commercial jets roar overhead, just a few hundred feet above? It never gets old.

It’s a fantastic place for families, aviation enthusiasts, bikers, joggers, or anyone who just wants to relax by the river. I usually bike in on the Mount Vernon Trail or drive — just be aware the lot fills up fast on weekends.

The plane noise is intense (and honestly, awesome), but might be a bit much for young kids — ear protection is a smart move. Bring a blanket or some chairs and enjoy the show.

Only real downside: the restroom situation. Just porta-potties, and they’re inconsistent at best. Still worth it for the experience.

Great view for everyone unfortunately some bikers on the trail think they have a special privilege over people who jog/walk the trail. A biker kept ringing his bell and yelling “I’m on your left “ three times and I said to him “I heard you”. He then flips me off and proceeds to curse me out. I told him to get off his bike and say it to my face like a man should do. You know he kept peddling away…. I jog here often and there is plenty of space for us both, and even if there isn’t, you have a bike that can simply go on the grass to avoid stuff like this. Bikers feel entitled for whatever reason. Next time I will carry rocks for men riding a bike and aim it at their head if they decide to curse me out again. It’s crazy to think you’re more entitled to the path than I am. Then run away after you curse me out. Just pathetic grown individuals who think they can talk to a young man who just turned 30 anyway he wants. It’s inexcusable and I...
