Our family has been shopping at Sugar and Spice for several years now. We have found some great clothing at great quality and prices for our children on our many shopping trips there. We have another one on the way, so I would enjoy browsing their baby items, which they consistently seem to have a decent selection. I was always thankful for whenever we can consign some items for store credit so we can budget accordingly for our family while preventing more land waste. The store and the items are clean, and the location is easy to find and has good parking.
The staff is mostly friendly, kind, and helpful. But, I am only rating 4/5 stars because I have noticed that every once in a while, you will encounter an older employee working the cash register with an unpleasant demeanor. I will usually brush it off; however, on my last visit, the woman spoke to me condescendingly because I was unaware that consigning operations were now occurring next door and how, according to her, it has been “that way for over a year” if I checked “all over social media and the emails”. I was stunned by her abrupt response. The negative tone and body language were unnecessary and rude, when she could have simply informed about the new protocol professionally and non-chalantly. Her reaction was as if she took it personally that I was unaware. As a customer and as a mother who was there with her children, this one sour encounter out of our many visits there was unnecessarily embarrassing, and it is unfortunately enough to keep me away...
Read moreAs a buyer, this store is ok. Sometimes you can find items that you need. It is small, and there is not a lot of inventory compared to other consignment stores (Once Upon a Child in Newport News is probably 2.5 times larger).
As a consignor, I cannot recommend this store. The last time I dropped off a tub of toys, the store lost them. I went back a couple months later and there was no record that I had dropped off anything, even though I put my name all over the box of toys. Their workroom is very disorganized, and the system of cosigning is very archaic. They have you put your name on spiral bound notebook and tuck your stuff into a random tub. It's not surprising that they lost my items.
I hope they've changed the system (this was about four months ago). It could be a good little consignment store, it's just...
Read moreCould be because I’m from a larger city with many consignment stores, but I’m always underwhelmed with the selection here. There’s a very small section for 3T, and prices seem way off. There was a used Hanna Andersson pajama there today for $10 with wash wear — just ride 2 miles down the street and get a new HA pajama from the outlet for $12. There’s a selection of women’s clothes, mostly high end brands, which is nice. Small dancewear selection. It overall feels cluttered and would be very hard to navigate with a stroller. They do have a playroom with 2-3 toys, which is helpful. We always visit when we are in the area visiting family, but I don’t think I’ve ever gotten more than 1-2 pieces. Check their hours; they’re odd. They also close for the winter, which I...
