My husband and I had a fantastic 10-night private tour of Uzbekistan organized by Zokir at Silk Road Destinations. Details on Wanderwiles. From the start, Zokir was very quick to respond to my questions and input and happy to tailor the details of our trip to suit us. His prices were very competitive with other tours I considered, even with group tour prices. Our flight from Paris arrived in Urgench before dawn and a driver was waiting as promised to drive us the 45-minutes to our hotel in Khiva. (Hotel Orient Star Khiva, a lovely former madrassa inside the old city walls and adjacent to the iconic Kalta-Minor Minaret.) Zokir promised me an early check-in, and sure enough, the man at the hotel front desk surreptitiously handed me a key so we could get a few hours sleep before starting our city tour, asking me to keep the key hidden since he couldn't offer the same to a group of French tourists who stood nearby. The rest of the trip went like that, with little details to make our trip ideal and adjusting start times and whatnot to suit us. Uzbekistan is beautiful and fascinating and we found the people to be very friendly and welcoming. Language was an issue the times we were out wandering on our own, but we managed easily and felt safe exploring. Our Silk Road Destination city guides spoke English (some better than others, but all very functional) and Umid, who drove us for 5 days spoke much more English than we expected and really added to our trip with his stories, insights, and love of food. We felt really lucky to have him and enjoyed his company. Zokir checked in with me throughout the trip and responded immediately to coordinate changes when small issues arose (like the time they closed the road in front of our Samarkand hotel for a bike race making it impossible for Umid to drive directly to the hotel to pick us up for the day). All in all, we felt very well taken care of and I highly recommend Zokir and Silk Road...
Read moreWhat a fantastic city Samarkand is. Really beautiful buildings - unique architecture and lovely food. Also, not yet (really) on the tourist scene so fairly quiet and easy to get into places. I would recommended people to travel there - especially now as there as still a few Soviet style Lada's about to see! I enjoyed the tour arranged by Silk Road destinations - but when I buy a full day tour I expect that - not the 5 hours I got on day one and the 3 hours on day two....so I was charged for 2 full days and got one day...over two days. Worse still - when I complained - I was told that they knew the day was only 4 to 5 hours long as the sites are close by....so they knowingly oversold.... In summary GO to Samarkand - Be wary of who you choose for your...
