I stayed at the Executive Suite for 2 nights. Coming in by bus early in the morning, I was able to arrange for an early check-in at extra charge. The staff here are warm and hospitable. What strikes you first as you enter the property are the plants in their garden. You've got all sorts of vegetables and flowers that are used in their food.
The room itself is spacious and I love how I'm able to see the mountains from the bed. The bed also has a heater to keep you warm and toasty even on the colder nights. In the bathroom, I loved how wide and deep the wooden tub is, which is quite different from other hotels where sometimes it can be difficult to stretch out fully.
The breakfast here is pretty good and healthy. You have a choice of 3 food options and 2 drinks. For food options, I highly recommend the baked egg with bacon. What you get is a hard boiled egg where the yolk is mixed in with bacon bits. And all this sits atop a salad. I also liked the highland vegetable dim sum which had four dumplings in warm comforting soup, perfect for the chilly mornings. I loved the fresh juice of the day, where I got to sample the local orange juice.
As I had booked directly with them for 2 nights, I was given the option of a family dinner. This was a chance to interact with the staff over dinner. This dinner was also very impressive, where we had a platter of ingredients which we would wrap up in rice paper. I also loved the sweet and sour soup.
As this hotel is a little far from Sapa town, I had my meals in the hotel's restaurant as well. I highly recommend the House-Smoked Salmon with grilled vegetables. It isn't your typical smoked salmon one might see at a buffet. It was a whole salmon fillet that's been smoked to perfection, complemented by a very tasty sauce. If you're vegetarian, I would recommend the special rice with seaweed and eggs. The egg was seemingly baked in a thin layer of dough pastry. The rice, with the seaweed and mushrooms, had a good amount of umami.
Facilities-wise, they have a small fitness room equipped with a bench press and two dumbbells where you can swap out the weights. You can work out to a nice scenery. There's also a small pool that overlooks the valley but I found this a little cold. Nonetheless, it makes for very impressive photos. Above the fitness room, there's a small open space where you can gaze upon the valley and be alone with your thoughts.
The hotel is also able to arrange treks and classes. I had a trek through 3 villages, priced at USD 45. This was a trek that lasted around 4 hours, with lunch included. Do be warned that the treks in the area have a somewhat steep incline. I also had a cooking class, priced at USD 40, where we were brought to the market with the chef. There, the chef pointed out some of the local ingredients and it was quite insightful, especially seeing salmon in tanks. The cooking class consisted of making fresh spring rolls, salmon sweet and sour soup, and a caramelized pork belly with purple rice. There was more hands-on in preparing the spring rolls, while the other two dishes were predominantly watching the preparation. Nonetheless, a very wholesome experience as you get to savour the 3 dishes at the end.
Overall there's plenty to do here at Sapa Clay House. Alternatively, it's the perfect place to be still and...
ย ย ย Read moreOur family just left a 3 night stay at Sapa Clay House and are still buzzing with excitement and beaming with gratitude for the amazing staff and experience there. Hai and his family are incredibly accommodating and welcoming to this gorgeous mountaintop Eco-resort.
Transportation to and from Hanoi was a breeze thanks to the Clay house arranging a limo van with WiFi to take us door to door.
We were greeted by Hai and his two adorable dogs, Andy and Cindy, who will welcome you excitedly but will also give you space if you want it (I have no personal space when it comes to animals so I was in heaven. They seem to understand whom to love on and whom to leave alone, so if youโre not a dog person, donโt worry!)
The rooms are small and minimal and beautiful. Beds are equipped with electrical blankets and the rooms have heaters that warm the rooms quickly and efficiently. Our bed was on the hard side which is great for me, but good to know in case thatโs an issue for you.
During our stay we did two treks which were led by an incredibly kind and knowledgeable guide who took us into two different villages. Once we went into Lao Chai and shopped for handicrafts and ate amazing noodles for lunch, which were well-earned after the 2 hour trek through the hills and bamboo forest. The second day we hiked through terraced rice fields, through Cat Cat Village, and up the mountain to a waterfall on a more strenuous 4 hour trek. We got to make our own spring rolls and eat a delicious Vietnamese meal at a home stay before we hit the more difficult part of the trek.
The part of our stay at Clay House that we will all be talking about for years is the food. Everything we were served was gorgeously plated, exquisitely prepared, and goshdarn delicious. The crispy fried tofu, tofu with Sapa mushrooms, braised pork belly, and French toast were among our familyโs favorites. We had to remind ourselves to eat in town some because we probably would have just stayed at the hotel restaurant all day ๐
All in all, the stay was absolutely amazing and we are so grateful to have chosen Sapa Clay House to help us get the absolute most out of our...
ย ย ย Read moreWhere to start with the amazing Sa Pa Clay House?? Starting weeks away from our trip, Vuong and the staff made sure that we were taken care of. He helped us to arrange the perfect experience to maximize both our relaxation and adventure in the surrounding area via the many options they have for guided trekking. The house itself is perfectly located just far enough outside Sa Pa City, which we were happy to escape with its tourist trappings, but not so far as to cause inconvenience. Also the view is to die for, as the rooms all look out over the valley below. The rooms are all very well appointed, with the executive suite being a great treat for a special occasion. The second greatest quality of Sa Pa Clay House is its food. We have traveled extensively and had some very good food the world over, but we were left speechless and pleasantly full at every sitting, remarking at the end of our stay that we may have found the best weโve had yet there.. We were also delighted to take a private cooking class with the chef so that we could take a little piece of the Clay House with us to share with loved ones as the staff did so many times with us. If the food is the second best quality, then the warmth and care with which Vuong and his team approach every aspect of your experience is surely the greatest. This is what put the Clay House over the edge for us. We were celebrating a very special occasion, and they made sure we felt celebrated. From the herbal bath to the private cooking class, we simply could not have enjoyed our experience there more. We found ourselves remarking that we wish we were staying much longer than three days, but alas this first visit will not be our last to the Clay House, we are certain. Weโre already looking forward to seeing the whole team next time, seeing how they have grown, visiting their sister spa in Sa Pa City (The Tonkin Spa), and truly relaxing into the luxury and care they offer again. See you again Sa...
