My girlfriend and I took 12 days in Mui Ne, where we had 7-8 lessons each plus a few days of board hire. We had surfed in the UK a few times but wanted to take our skills to a new level. We have been extremely impressed with Mui Ne Local Surf and their brilliant instructors.
The instructors recognised the level we were starting at and focused on getting us as much time standing as possible. Unlike our experience in the UK, the instructor is one on one with you and they have a brilliant eye for spotting suitable waves. As you paddle into the wave they will give you a little push if you need so you can match the speed of the wave. Given that paddling technique, wave reading & timings are the hardest thing to master this meant we caught waves which we would otherwise have missed & maximised our time standing on the board.
All the instructors here are great, especially for beginner level, but we have to give a massive shout out to Monkey who was incredible at taking us to the next level. He's so capable & strong in the water (even in strong waves), charismatic & engaging and he has an eye for reading waves which left us in awe. I suppose that's what 20 years in the game gets you. During our time here we became friends and would go to the bar with him in the evening where we talked all things surfing - this made the whole experience feel completely immersive & left us with some really useful feedback, inspiring us for our next session.
As we continued to improve, we found ourselves catching waves in medium swell - which is full on! My girlfriend learnt to swim last year and is a little nervous in the strong water & found paddling out quite challenging. Monkey made her feel really safe and he kept a close eye on her, supporting with paddling out in the stronger waves.
The commitment, passion & work ethic here was notable & to be admired. The vibe is relaxed and everyone is very friendly and welcoming. A big thank you to everyone at Mui Ne Local Surf and also to Sarah for taking these brilliant photos of us.
The only small recommendation i would make is to help the coaches to develop more specific phrases in English to relay feedback. Ie. the phrase 'more power' can be interpreted as 'the wave didn't have enough power', 'you need to lean forwards more' or 'you needed to paddle into the wave harder'. We would sometimes need to seek some...
Read moreOh man, I love this surf school & it's people SO MUCH. I was only going to do 1 lesson but extended my stay to fit in the 7-lesson surf school. It was the best time learning from anh Tuan, anh Bay, and anh Cuong. They're all really kind and talented surf teachers who make the lessons so intuitive. You progress in skill quickly, especially if you can take multiple lessons with them. They catered my lessons based on how I was progressing and I got to work on my pop up, stance, dropping in, turning left & right, and learning to read the waves (all as a 'beginner')!! Anh Bay knew I wanted to be challenged and level up quickly so he pushed me exactly how I wanted/needed. I love how they try to develop your confidence and show you how to think like a surfer already. I took one class with another place in Danang but it doesn't even come close to Mui Ne Local Surf School's focus on teaching. I also felt like I got more hands on practice on the water than the other surf lesson I did.
em Pho was taking pics and even gave me super helpful feedback on what he noticed from the shore - that helped me adjust during my next sets. The weather didn't bring us waves in the 2nd half of the week which was out of everyone's control so I completed 4 of the 7 classes & kindly refunded for the remaining unused classes. Everyday, I looked forward to the lessons because I got to be out on the water and hang out with these guys (sometimes got lucky with 2 sessions in one day!!). I wish I could've surfed more and more with Mui Ne Local Surf School.
Eternally grateful for the chance to come back to VN where I was born and learn to surf here (after wanting to my whole life). These memories will always stay in my heart forever. I think what they're doing to grow the surfing culture in VN is...
Read moreMy lessons with Mui Ne Local helped me progress my surfing so much! They saw my level and helped me get better from there. My last surf lesson in another continent ended with me learning to turn and my first lesson with them was helping me turn! I thought cross stepping was going to take me years to do but they got me to do it my second lesson! And I didn’t even say anything about how I wanted to do that one day. The coaches just push you to the next level. I even got down to a midsize/ fun board! I like how honest the coaches are about the number of lessons you need until being independent. It’s also nice that sometimes they’ll surprise you with pictures they took of you. Here are some of mine ☺️ Outside of lessons they’ll watch out for you and give you tips so you’re never really alone. Plus, they’ll watch your stuff on the beach while you’re surfing if they’re hanging out on the beach too! I love love love how community focused they are! Which means they think about others and help when and where they can! I’ve also seen the community come to help them when needed and it’s a beautiful thing. After traveling nonstop for years, community is so important and its like having a family here in Mui Ne any time you come back! Also the team’s diverse knowledge helps you learn about so much from the different sports like surfing and kitesurfing to spots to do them and even creative outlets like surf photography. Overall, such a great surf school to invest your time and money in to improve your skills and have...
