Thursday, June 19 is Juneteenth, the federally recognized holiday marking the end of slavery in the United States. Also known as Black Independence Day , it commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform enslaved people of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
