First time I've been to the Sussex since their renovations. Decor was OK, colours a bit unusual didn't quite match. Chairs quite uncomfortable. The food was excellent however. I had the kangaroo and my friend had the porterhouse. Had I known though, that we would be charged for a tiny tub of aioli and mushroom sauce on the side I'd never have ordered them. The prices were somewhat extravagant but did not match the menu prices on their website. Every single item was between $3-5 more. I expected to pay roughly $110 Was charged $134 I would go back because the food was so good but I'd be querying these price hikes. The review above was written over the Easter weekend.
We went back today, Mother's Day. Tables seemed even closer than last month. Service was atrocious. Constantly having to flag someone for water, clear table etc. Why even bother with a bread side plate is your don't serve bread? Table for four was so small with water, vase of flowers, salt and pepper etc that when our food arrived there wasn't room for the plates. We had to request they remove flowers and water etc. I ordered the exact same as did my friend as last month and this time I received a tiny piece of Roo, cut into 4 pieces. Are you kidding?!? Previously I had two pieces. $37!? My daughter and son ordered the entree prawns. 3 prawns $26 that's absolutely ridiculous. Honestly, do better. This was awful. I talked this place up because the food was so good but this time, sub standard. Won't be returning...
Read moreWe are locals who were really looking forward to a revamped Sussex. Tried it a few times years ago but didn’t go back because the food wasn’t great. Like others I am sure, we were very keen to try the new Sussex. I went with friend two nights ago and whilst not brilliant (a few staff need to learn how to use tills etc), it was pretty good. Tonight was my birthday dinner with the family. It took 1 hour before any food came to the table and my 11 and 9 year were climbing the walls. Mine came and was wrong. That took another 20 minutes to sort out. Bit of a disaster I have to say. Yes, I was offered a free drink (eventually) but not happy. As we were about to leave, I was asked by Kelly if she could clear the plates. I had already mentioned to two previous people that we had a disaster of a night and perhaps a manager could speak to us but nothing happened. Anyway, Kelly was the difference between 1 star and 3 stars as she was empathetic and most importantly in this situation did something that will mean we try them again. She said sorry and gave us a voucher as an apology. As someone who trains people in customer service for a living, this gesture was huge and what should happen. Anyway, big rant but I feel better now :). We will give them...
Read moreThree of us dined 29/7/23 for lunch. There was one other table of 6 people in the dining room and ourselves. Not having been there before we waited for the waiter to take our order & after some time we discovered that we had to order the bar. We ordered & then waited quite some time for our meals to arrive, all 3 mains were luke warm at best, and appeared to have been pre-cooked previously at some point in time & the kitchen had done a poor job of reheating it with the pork fillet not only being luke warm but over cooked, dry & chewy. The sides of crushed roast potatoes with rosemary were also cold & not crushed. We asked for them to be returned to the kitchen & minutes later they were returned to the table after being chucked in the deep fryer to reheat them resulting in greasy potatoes! The zucchini side was equally disappointing. Overall, an unremarkable experience costing $193, service that was noticeably absent even though there were 3 staff on the floor-somewhere! Our experience means that we could not recommend The Sussex hotel & will not be returning again. There are plenty of other dining options to choose from...
