Faar Farr Away Cafe & Dessert Bar - A Café Worth Getting Lost For.
Tucked away with little signage, Faar Farr Away’s location is far from ideal - though for anyone who braves the labyrinth to find it, you may just understand why that might be a blessing in disguise.
At first glance, the interior is as expected, stock-standard tables and chairs à la the average suburban café. But that simple setup belies the mind-blowing food and service hiding underneath this otherwise plain facade. That’s not to say the café isn’t without its charm - the walls are lovingly handpainted with Ghibli characters and the like, with a Claw/UFO machine tucked against the wall and Anime and LEGO figures dotting the service counter. It’s not much, but it’s just enough set dressing to make give the place a little personality and whimsy, without descending into outright cluttered chaos.
The service itself? Fantastic. While placing a phone order for takeaway, the staff was quick to confirm they had a new menu I might not have seen (as though I didn’t already have it open in front of me, whisper-practicing my order as any unreasonably anxious phone-talker should be, jeez). The great service didn’t stop there either - upon entry, I was greeted, my takeaway order ready to be packed, and iced drink made fresh on the spot. Their hojicha? An absurdly easy to drink, earthy treat any self-respecting matcha enthusiast should give a go while there.
The menu is wide ranging; familiar breakfast/brunch staples with an Asian inspired flare begin the menu, before eventually diving in full force with the rice bowls and Asian sides. Everything is made with the utmost care, seasoned to the point of perfection and frankly, far better than any hidden cafe has any right to be. The Tom Yum Fried Chicken.. Something so good shouldn’t be buried under “Sides”. Each crispy, zingy, umami-laden nugget of fried gold is a blow to the senses in the best possible way. So stupidly good I’d sell my firstborn just to avoid saying goodbye to the final piece - and I’m sure I’m not alone. The orphan market is going to boom when the general public find about this damn chicken.
Sure, the pricing leans a little closer to “my Mortgage Broker is going to have questions” than “a weekly binge”, but those thoughts are quickly pushed away the moment you take that first bite. I could dwell further - but frankly, when the food is this good? It’s the last thing on my damn mind. Savouring each bite is all encompassing by that point.
Thankfully, I don’t live close by (you might even say I live.. Faar Farr Away) and maybe that’s for the best; it’s a dangerously delicious place to have found, and my bank account cowers at the thought of any easier access.
And yet, it’s been a mere 24 hours, and already I dream of the chicken. That crunch. That zest. That pure unadulterated umami hit - straight from the stomach to the bloodstream. It’s dangerously delicious.
So until it gets more popular, let’s keep it our...
Read moreWent to see what the big hype was about this Cafe. Sadly, pretty average experience. First of all, finding a Cafe snug in under residential apartments, parking is shared, some reserved for residents when they should have their own underground/undercover parking?
Couldn't find how to get in the Cafe, walked around trying to find a door. Very small confined door, not really visible.
The Cafe is a long hall way look, seating is narrow and confined, not suitable for disabled people or mobility devices. It was VERY noisy, there's no sound blocking and when there's 20 -30 people it can get very loud. Not suitable for people with sensory difficulties.
Food: EXPENSIVE, had the Terayaki burger, which was under cooked, tasted and looked uncooked. Only had a few bites, had to ask for an actual cooked one. Staff were friendly, but a little all over the place, talking private conversations out loud, on top of the already noisy environment. Could hear staff's conversations of private things...not really professional. Chips are undercooked, very light coloured, packed with a sweet and salty herbs and spice mix which I wouldn't eat again. Coffee was average and very small.
Staff didn't ask what size coffee I wanted, they didn't ask how cooked I wanted the burger or egg.. and for $25 a burger, you'd think you would get a decent size. But these are tiny. The weird cheesecake sweet I got was disappointing, just sugar in a biscuit type shell covering it. Honestly, the ingredients in all the food was really boring or over powering to the point it made my mind, first time to see the hype and I'd prefer going somewhere else.
Atmosphere: loud, not disabled friendly, cooking/chef needs to go easy on the herbs and spices, and cook the...
Read moreI wrote a big review but I lost it so I'm just going to give a short one instead now. Basically I will not be returning to this Cafe. Hesitantly went after seeing the dessert I wanted was $25, over priced in my opinion but their socials person assured me dessert much larger then other places and made of quality ingredients. We ordered the mango sticky rice, and well I was left disappointed. Being that the dish is called mango sticky rice one would assume the mango and sticky rice would be the stand out product of the dish. Basically you just get a big bowl of shaved coconut ice along with a couple of condiments. Mango portions were decent, no complaints there but the sticky rice was a joke. It was dished up in you know the little sauce bowls your kids usually get with the nuggets and chips, that's how little of sticky rice I got. It was literally 2 tablespoons worth if that, disgraceful. I don't consider this dish of value or quality ingredients. I calculated I could make it for $5 max, then as an extra kick in the guts they have a stupid rule on their menu that each person other then children need to purchase an item, drink or whatever but everyone has to order something. Well I'm not sure what age a child is in their opinion, I was too stunned to ask but I was there with my 14 year, too old for them probably. Considering how quiet it was and their already overpriced dessert the request from the girl serving me to purchase another item was rude in my opinion. Going out these days for most is a luxury let alone being forced to spend more money....
