Tapleys Charcoal Chicken — Restaurant in Adelaide

I’ve been here twice now. The first time, the service was extremely slow. Maybe they were just having an off night. I couldn’t believe how ridiculously slow it was the second time though. Standing inside while I waited, I had plenty of time to study how this shop operates. They like to take 5-6 orders, and then make everything all at the same time, essentially in one big order. Rather then serving the orders as they’re ready, they place them in the warmer for 5-10 minutes while they continue making the remaining orders. I was order number 5. Order number 4 and 3 received theirs before order number 1. I could see he was just as annoyed. Order number 6 then received theirs before me. My order was a very simple and basic 2 battered fish and small chips with gravy. Nothing complicated, the simplest order you could think of. After 28 (YES, 28!) minutes of waiting, I was approached by a staff member and was told they ran out of gravy. “Did you just want the chips?” He asked. I said I would like my full order that I paid for, to which he said it would be an even longer wait. This is the best chicken place in Adelaide. We get chicken and chips every Thursday night and it always is outstanding. The chicken has so much flavour, due to it being cooked over hot coals and flames. Chips are always cooked to perfection and the gravy I have no idea how they make it but it is so nice. Tonight 11/4/24 we went to get our normal Thursday night dinner but got there a bit late and there was no chickens left, more where cooking but 30 minutes wait. Service is absolutely terrible. It felt like they couldnt care less if they sold anything, it was THAT bad. I got half a chicken with chips, a small mixed beans salad and small pasta salad and small container of carrots. Chips were absolutely revolting, didnt put any salt on and tasted like fish! Chicken was also lacking in flavour. Carrots were cold after the 5 minutes it took us to get home and both salads were so bland and boring, like how do you even fail at making a salad!! Its SALAD!!
