Railway Hotel — Restaurant in Armidale

My brother and I organized a 20+ family get together at this hotel recently. The manger was so rude to us when we asked why we had to pay $14 to exchange chips for mash potatoe for our near 90yr old mum who cannot eat chips. No empathy or understanding was shown to us, his customers. He then went on to tell us that if we don’t want to pay the extra charge we should eat elsewhere (which we would have done except family members had already sat down and had drinks etc). We were in shock as we had never experienced such aggressive behavior towards customers in all the 50 plus years of living in the area. Great food and the prices are reasonable, but they've made some changes in the past year I really don't like.

Food is no longer brought to your table, you're expected to pick it up now. This is annoying as the layout of the building is awkward and there's some narrow corners to navigate while holding food.

The entrance to the children's area is littered with claw machines and the pokies are visible from the top of the playground. Great if you want to introduce your children to gambling at an early age, but that's not something I'd like to do as a parent. I paid $40 for a steak that ended up being the size of my palm so very very small. When it finally arrived after 45 minutes it was mostly bone and gristle. When I complained to management I was offered a refund. However when I brought my plate back, the chef looked at it and refused because I had eaten most of the meal which I had. Most of the meal was vegetables and gravy. Given the lack of meat, that was the only part of the meal that was edible. $40 and quite frankly the chef would’ve seen that that was a bad cut of meat before cooking it and was obviously relying on the unlucky recipient to not complain.
