We enjoyed a Saturday evening meal at Freda's this week. We found the service from all staff prompt and very friendly but particularly from the lady who had only started there recently. I ordered Coffin Bay Oysters with a Mignonette sauce but they were so fresh and flavoursome that only a dash of pepper and a squeeze of lemon was required to fully appreciate all their oystery deliciousness. I had a half dozen but wished I had ordered a dozen or 3 dozen.... My husband had the croquettes/arancini which were beef this week. They were very flavoursome, soft and pillowy and the serving was generous. For our main course, I had the Chicken Supreme (the Chef's special). A pretty large portion of tender grilled chicken breast served with a delectable bernaise sauce AND tarragon jus, plump grilled prawns and a crunchy potato rosti, parsnip and carrot. Seriously, this should be on the regular menu, it was that good. My husband had the Chicken Parma which came with lashings of stretchy Mozzarella, an Italian style coleslaw and tasty seasoned chips. He was a happy man. (He did say he was a bit sorry not to have ordered the same dish as me after having a sample.) We were too full for dessert but we did enjoy a couple of Holgate beers and a glass of delicious chardonnay and a hearty tempranillo. The cost was very reasonable for such high quality and yummy tasting food.
We were a bit surprised however, that Freda's wasn't busier for a Saturday night. Our reservation was for 7.30pm so not too late and it wasn't a particularly chilly one for Ballarat in winter, so we can only wonder if it suffers a bit for its location. The Indian places across the road (which also get good reviews) were empty and the only place around that looked to be jumping was the Munster's Arms as they were hosting a birthday party. The restaurant is a large space and can feel a bit cavernous and we thought maybe some white table cloths and softer lighting might zhoosh it up a bit for evening sittings. The choice of music, however, was good, at a proper volume and not at all invasive to conversation.
Sorry for the (overly) long review but I think Freda's is well worth it. All I can say is do make the effort to go up to Bakery Hill and give Freda's a try. It is one of the better restaurants in Ballarat and it would be great to see them thrive and prosper when...
Read moreFirstly, food was wonderful. However the service was absolutely dismal. I understand being short staffed, but your staff were clearly able to serve walk ins and tables of two without issue. We however only had a drink order taken when we sought out a waitress on 4 separate occasions. Then drinks were brought out 1 at a time, until a member of our party brought a tray down. We then had to again request our food order be taken. Food was brought out in dribs and drabs 90 minutes after being seated. One order was submitted to the kitchen incorrectly. Considering the poor service we all chose not to order any entrees or dessert which cost you money. Your manager did comp 1 meal and 3 drinks, but was barely familiar enough with the food to even be able to recognize what he was holding. Considering there are other reviews here with a very familiar story, you should be listening to your customers and rectifying these issues immediately. Apologizing is very empty when you have clearly not addressed issues that have been occurring for over a year. You also have an opportunity when you realize 1 hour in that your guests are being clearly overlooked to turn the situation around but you...

On a rainy Ballarat night, I had the pleasure of dining at Freda’s Cafe Restaurant and Bar in Ballarat—a true hidden gem. From the moment I stepped inside, the warm ambiance and attentive service made me feel right at home.
I opted for a glass of wine and their newest menu addition, the Two-Way Lamb. The presentation alone was a feast for the eyes—elegant and refined, yet surprisingly affordable. The dish itself was a symphony of flavors and textures, each bite more delightful than the last. It's one of those rare meals that leaves you speechless, and I truly believe words can't do it justice—you simply must experience it yourself.
A special shout-out to Mafel, whose genuine smile and impeccable hospitality elevated the entire dining experience. It's clear that Freda's team pours their heart into every detail.
Bravo to the entire team at Freda’s Cafe Restaurant and Bar—this evening was nothing short of magical. I can't...
