Feb 2021 Update: DINER BEWARE! This is no longer Shunking with the rave reviews. Note the subtle name change. They're under new ownership and the quality just isn't there anymore. That beautiful honey chicken? It's now spongy, paltry and actually salty, if you can believe that! With barely any honey! Sweet and sour pork? Stingy and overcooked with watery, discoloured sauce and way too heavy on the vinegar (that interesting sour bias is gone - it's just vinegar now). Mongolian lamb was good, I'll give them that, but considering we spent over $100 on take-away, that's not enough to save it. Shun Hin have kept the pricing, but discarded virtually everything that made Shunking worth paying for. My advice? Avoid it. There are better places nearby. It's such a shame to see a great local restaurant reduced to this.
Leaving my previous review below for comparison.
Previous Review (NO LONGER TRUE): My wife and I decided to try Shunking after several recommendations from friends and we weren't disappointed. The dishes are flavoursome, packed with interesting textures and clearly prepared by talented people who care about what they're making.
There's a subtle citrussy zing to the honey chicken and a delightful crispness to the glaze hiding the smooth honey below, which is difficult to get right but Shunking have done it. These aren't 90% batter either, there's a generous strip of tender juicy meat in there too. The sweet and sour pork was delicious - good chunks of pork and again; not over the top on the batter. The strawberry sweet and sour sauce was interesting. As someone who prefers his sweet and sour biased towards the sour, I enjoyed the vinegary bite against the sugary sweetness. I also loved the idea of putting cauliflower in with the sauce - as someone who LOVES sauce, the cauliflower just soaks it all up and gives you a really satisfying mouth feel.
You know that hipster burger place you like where they've taken a simple idea like burgers and chips and imagined what it would be like if you obsessed about care and attention and used quality ingredients? I feel like this is what Shunking are doing with Chinese takeaway. I've written other reviews of Chinese restaurants where I've said "this is what you have in mind when you're craving Chinese." Well for Shunking I'd say, this is what you have in mind when you want Chinese, but you want it a bit special, something with that little bit extra. Like when you crave that burger, but Maccas is the last thing on your mind.
I still love my local "guilty pleasure" Chinese, but I think these are two separate things. Shunking, we will be back for sure.
P.S. Sorry our doorbell...

Read moreI went here for dinner tonight with friends who had previously been here.... they are now under new management. Our booking was at 7. By 8:00 we still had not received our entree. When it did come out our san choy bao was less than a teaspoon per person. We questioned several times where our food was. We kept getting told it was busy. The restaurant was not busy. They were too busy focusing on online orders. They brought one main dish out without the others or the rice. The dishes barely had any chicken or lamb mostly onion not good enough. One of the staff was very rude when we questioned the drink they served as it didnt taste like what we ordered then proceeded to sneeze into her hands and continue serving. Clearly they have not done their covid training and they certainly werent abiding by social distancing when the tables were so close my chair touched the person behind me. The ‘manager’ came over but did not seem to understand what we were telling her. Just kept saying thank you. Over 2 hours later we finally left and considering everything they gave us a whole $9 discount. We will certainly never be going back here. If you want your food to come out within a reasonable time frame and with enough protein in your main dish to feed everyone go elsewhere! Again in this time, please retrain your staff on covid hygiene. Sneezing into your hand and contuning to serve is disgusting and...
