Bertallis is an old school bakery on the edge of town. It stocks all the sweet classics in addition to gluten free bread. Previously they've won awards for their pies...not sure they are worth mentioning any more. The Ned Kelly breakfast style pie was really salty. Coffee was ok. Nothing memorable. Olive 'sourdough' is bland...no crust worthy of its price point. Loads of seating inside retro dining area, or on main street. On street parking is easy.

Always on the lookout for home made style and not deep fried foods on our regional road trips, this bakery is our go-to in Benalla. You can actually get a healthy sandwich on brown bread with plenty of crunchy lettuce or salad. The pies and quiches are good too. And don't forget the jelly slice for dessert. Seriously the best jelly slice I've ever had. Not too sweet with a solid slice of really tangy raspberry jelly. I'm in heaven!

Sorry Bertallis 😬 Salty, grissley, busted up pies are inedible. Cheap, bulk pastry self destructs as soon as you threaten to eat it. It’s like it’s trying to warn you or something. Terrible. Have tried a dozen times and a bunch of different types but have given up. Apologies to the staff you’re always so friendly.

Today I called in for a hot chocolate, also ordered a jam and coconut slice, the chocolate was nice, but the slice was as hard as a rock (the topping was solid) I asked for another one this was the same. I sent them back and changed it for an apple cake (this was OK), to add insult to the problem the waitress came back with a knife and fork (this was an insult) for a small cake. I have perfectly fine teeth. My husband is a chef and my son is a highly rewarded pastry chef. This was something I cook myself and know how it should be. I did not like the attitude of the waitress or the service, or the product. I also noted she returned the slice to...

Terrible customer service!!! The older women serving me was clearly not happy about making my sandwich because she had “clearly just packed it all up” throughout my experience ahe was being extremely passive aggressive slamming things, ignoring what I was saying... I had to repeat myself multiple times!! Super stingy with sandwich fillings... like come on two pieces of cucumber and one piece of beetroot! If you didn’t want to make my sandwich I would of been happy to go back to Hides bakery! Took a risk here clearly wasn’t worth it! The sandwich was horrible and tasteless!! The rudeness of this women even made the people I was with...

This place has some genuinely nice food, but two problems hold it back from achieving five stars:

An inconsiderate staff member was making excessive noise as we tried to place our order with another one, making it difficult to speak to one another About a quarter of the tables were still dirty from the last people who had gone through by the time that we were ready to sit down and eat, requiring us to rearrange the chairs, just to seat 3 at a clean table

Otherwise, it was (as previously mentioned) a nice place to have lunch, if ignoring...
