To start with an overview, this restaurant has some of the most overpriced, low quality Chinese cuisine I have had yet, ever since arriving in Australia half a year ago. Seafood and vegetarian fried rice was ordered, along with a dry stir fry beef hor fun. Fried rice is some of THE most basic Chinese dishes of them all, and to somehow screw it up is a very amateur mistake. To begin with, the rice was clearly overcooked before it went into the wok, because even after the high heat treatment, the rice had a slightly soggy, sticky and mushy consistency, something that would not be amiss from the traditional rice dumping 粽子, but absolutely not in a dish of fried rice. The ingredients in it were also low quality, with crab sticks, diced frozen peas and carrots, with all the taste of said low quality stuff. Apparently garlic and spring onion was too expensive for a $24 dish, despite being a staple of Chinese cuisine. The dry stir fry beef hor fun shouldve been renamed- wet, oily and extremely salty beef hor fun, though that was written in Chinese. The English name was simply beef rice noodle which was, at least, accurate. The making of this dish is impossible in your average household, since an extremely high heat is needed to achieve that dryness without breaking up the hor fun. This restaurant clearly doesnt have the equipment necessary, considering how sopping wet the hor fun came out, and the pool of soy sauce and oil at the bottom made the last couple of bites painfully salty and greasy. All this, together with a passable dish of broiled broccoli and a mug of Asashi beer, came up to 94AUD, despite having been cooked with the skill of a middle schooler who once had some Chinese and decided to recreate them from memory. So how does this restaurant survive? Simple. Through a daily dose of Chinese tourist groups who, very likely, wont be recommending this place to anyone else, the restaurant survives but has no incentive to improve.
TLDR- Folks, if youre looking for food, i would highly suggest either going to cafe opposite the reception desk or packing...
Read moreMy daughter and I shared two vegetarian options and were disappointed with both. We ordered Thai basil tofu and vegetables which was noted to have a strong fish sauce aroma upon arrival at the table. The dish also strongly tasted of fish sauce, but we did not let this stop us eating the sticky and sweet dish with rice. The second dish arrived after we had finished the first offering, not at the same time. The vegetables and tofu green curry looked glutinous and proved to have a very strange flavour. I could smell coconut, but could not taste spice or coconut in the gluggy mess we were given. We both declined to eat it and asked to return it to the kitchen. The manager was called and proceeded to argue with us, saying he sells a lot of it. He asked if we had eaten green curry before and placed the blame of ignorance on us. I suggested he taste it because it was so strange, I could not imagine it was as it should be. He came back and told us it was correct and very spicy, making out this was our problem. Neither of us thought it was very spicy and denied this. We were offered a replacement meal, but we declined because we had not enjoyed our meal so far. We just wanted to leave. We were charged a partial fee for the dish despite not having eaten it and were constantly told we must not be used to Asian cuisine, that the problem lay with our ignorance… I countered that we have done Thai cooking courses, cook Thai at home, have travelled through Thailand and have Thai friends. Even taking into account regional differences, it was still inedible. Neither my daughter nor I like conflict, but I ended the arguement by telling the manager to stop arguing with his customers. To save my daughter further embarrassment I paid a partial amount towards the cost of the uneaten dish and left. As I still have 2 more nights on the island I have lost one of only a very limited few options for where to eat. I’m very disappointed and very pissed off at the bullying and gaslighting I...
Read moreWhen we arrived, we were the first people in line waiting to be seated. Many tables were empty. About four tables in either restaurant taken. So we thought service would be swift... 15 minutes later after being ignored by all the staff walking past, we were asked if we would like a table, and then told food would be at least 45min wait after ordering. They were not joking. They had four waiting staff and four tables being used. But food took well over an hour to arrive. I would also like to note that this was the first time I have ever had pineapple as an ingredient in my satay beef. To be precise the satay beef consisted of: beef (good), peanut sauce (well, it better...) onion (to be expected) and the surprise pineapple. That was it. The Kang Pao Chicken was significantly better and had an abundance of peanuts that would have served well in the satay. Paying was equally difficult. We stood at the counter for probably a solid 10 min while staff was collecting drinks and menus from behind the counter while ignoring us and the other family that was trying to pay to the point where we considered if walking out was appropriate. While we were seated we watched many hopeful potential guests turn up, line up to be seated and after an arduous long wait, depart with our food as the still had not been seated. So our experience was not unique. I recommend skipping this fine dinning option and going for the near by pizza. It is all: Better, faster and you don’t need to wait...
