There are items on the menu that say GF that are not gluten free - I recommend anyone who is celiac stay far away from this restaurant. I asked the waitress how they made the filo pie GF and she said that it was a typo on the menu. The cous cous dishes also say they are GF.
I have limited options because I have Crohn’s disease. The waitress did not seem to know much about what was in any of the dishes. I asked if it was possible to make the eggplant dish without chilli and she said yes, so I ordered it. When it came, it had chilli all on the top of it so I mentioned it to the waitress. They took the dish away and came back to ask me if it was an allergy or a preference. This should have been asked initially. I told her that I have Crohn’s disease so it’s an intolerance and I would get very sick if I have more than a small amount. They then brought it back to me and I started eating it. I was a couple of bites in and another waiter came over and told me that there actually is some chilli in the sauce. I decided to continue eating it because it didn’t taste too spicy at first (and to be fair the dish was extremely tasty. There was also nothing else on the menu I could eat unfortunately so it was either eat more of this or nothing) but after about 10 bites, I realised it was spicier than I had initially thought and I didn’t want to risk having a flare up of symptoms and feeling sick so I stopped eating it.
The waiter apologised and said they’d take care of it on the bill, but they ended up still charging us for half the dish. It’s true that I did eat some of the dish but the fact that they messed up so royally and still charged us was pretty unbelievable. it. On top of that, the waiter told off my friend as we were leaving, saying “if it’s something like Crohn’s and not just a preference, you really need to tell us” …. So, if it’s a preference this restaurant thinks it’s ok to ignore the preference and serve people the ingredient they don’t want?! We did tell the waitress that I had Crohn’s and I told her I’d get very sick and they still served it to me with chilli in it. I understand asking if it’s an allergy vs intolerance because of possible traces of the ingredient but they need to train their staff to ask this up front and take it seriously. I feel this restaurant is extremely irresponsible in dealing with food intolerances and potential celiac or other people who could get sick if they come to dine there.
The whole experience was very upsetting. I hope this restaurant doesn’t have anyone who has a serious food allergy coming to dine there. I hope they are able to change their menus to be accurate and train their staff better in future- to both know what’s in the dishes, and take food...
Read moreThis is clearly a popular place with the locals. We were one of the first to arrive at 8am on a busy Sunday morning in July, for a family breakfast, but within half an hour, the place had filled up. That gave it a fun, lively and energetic ambience, but also made it a tad loud, with the wooden floors, wooden furniture and plenty of glass. But still, it didn’t detract from what turned out to be a pleasant and relaxed birthday breakfast for my wife.
Booking via the website was quick and easy and we received a prompt email confirming our booking, and a further reminder the day before. When we arrived, we were made to feel welcome. Our booked table was ready and waiting for us in a nice spot in the middle of the room. The decor is warm and homely, featuring a tasteful white, blue and brown colour scheme with an interesting wine bottle display on one wall and various pieces of colourful modern art on another.
Our waiter was friendly, polite and attentive. He made sure that everything ran smoothly for us from beginning to end. Orders were promptly taken and the drinks and food came out quickly and in the correct order.
There were four of us, and we ordered a couple of the “brekkie pita boards” ($22 each), the smashed avo toast ($20) and coffees. Serving sizes were generous and the food was fresh and tasty. Everyone enjoyed their meals. My avo toast was quite an ambitious affair, more than I was expecting, with pistachios, dukkah, feta, a few falafel balls and little dollops of jam to sweeten it up. It was all beautifully prepared with love, care and attention to detail, and presented to the table on smart white or brown crockery. Coffees and lattes were perfect.
After our 25% Entertainment discount, we paid $90 for all that lot, including the four breakfasts and six drinks. Fair value, I guess in these inflationary times.
There is a single unisex toilet, which isn’t really enough, especially when it gets busy. It’s an old fashioned affair, in the middle of the dining area that’s been brightened up with colourful tiles above the basin. Apart from that, it’s clean and well provisioned with soap and hand towels.
Naim is on the corner of Collingwood and Hazlewood Streets, with easy and unrestricted parking in the vicinity. We found a spot on the rather steep Hazlewood Street side.
Overall, we had a fab breakfast here and were impressed with the fine food, the fast and efficient service and the casual and relaxed vibe. It’s helpful if you’re a member of “Entertainment” as it’s now called (previously the “Entertainment Book'', but as it’s no longer a book, all electronic, I guess the word book is superfluous) as you’ll get a 25% discount on your bill, up to...
Read moreWas very excited to be going to a Moroccan restaurant , and what a huge let down. I can honestly say this was the worst dining experience I have ever had in the 35 years I have been going to restaurants. We asked for 2 glasses of Rose which when they came out, the wine was completely cloudy . ( never seen a cloudy Rose before , so we asked the waitress who then proceeded to tell us that is how it is and you will get use to it ) unusually tasted very powdery so once again we asked the waitress why the wine was like that. Once again no explanation was given although we were asked if we wanted something else to which we replied yes. Then the waitress brought 4 glasses of wine back to the table and proceeded to advise us we may as well drink the powdery wine as we are being charged for it. This left a bitter taste in our mouths but we thought the food would save the day. Wow was I to be completely wrong, I had a chicken dish consisting of , a leg of chicken and 2 pieces of sweet potato which cost me $35. My friends had a fish broth which when the dish arrived at the table was couscous , a few bits of fish on a plate. Where was the bowl I thought it would come in, as a broth we all know consists of a watery substance if some kind. I will not even try and describe the meal my wife ordered , after she tasted it she could not continue and me being a person who loves food thought it could not be that bad so I tried the meal only to have trouble swallowing it Found this restaurant trying to be upmarket , however completely failing in all aspects . If there was a minus score I would have given this restaurant one. Totally...
