This is a super cool, fun little café that’s been decorated to resemble a 1950s style American Diner. It's airy, spacious and brightly lit, with indoor and outdoor seating. There are interesting retro pics on the wall, lots of greenery on the ceilings and soothing 1950s style music playing over the music system. It’s all very welcoming, homely and relaxed, and it's not surprising therefore that it has built up a solid reputation amongst the locals.
It’s an ideal place for a brekky or just a coffee, after a spot of shopping at Bunnings, which is in the same little centre.
The owner manager is a friendly, helpful and polite guy, who clearly takes pride in his restaurant. His assistant was efficient in taking orders and delivering food and drinks quickly to the table.
My wife and I had a late breakfast on a chilly Sun morning in June. We sat Indoors in comfy booth type seating. We ordered two coffees and two bagels: the New Yorker and the Soho. They were both delicious and filled with fresh and tasty ingredients. My “New Yorker'' had lashings of finely sliced salmon, with cream cheese, capers and onions on a warm toasted poppy seed bagel. My wife’s “Soho” had mushrooms, sundried tomato tapenade and zucchini and was served on a toasted plain bagel. Presentation was neat in cute little black baskets with black and white checked napkins. And what I really like about this place is the size of the coffee cups. Even the small coffee is large by the standards of the average café in Brisbane, where “small” generally means “tiny”.
All up, and after our Eat Club discount, (which is supposed to be 15%, but after ECs hidden cc fee, it’s actually only 14%) we paid $30 for two drinks and two bagels. That’s solid value for money as Australia races over the hyperinflationary cliff.
The toilets are the same ones used by the Bunnings customers and they’re located on the second level of the parking garage. There are separate male and female cubicles. They're not always kept in the cleanest condition, but at least they’re usable and there’s soap in the dispenser although the 1980s style hand dryer is a waste of space and there are no hand towels.
There’s free parking in the little centre's car park, and one can usually find a space quite easily.
Overall, we had a lovely brekky here, with a nice relaxed vibe, a warm and comfy interior, pleasant soothing music and excellent food and drink. We love this place and will definitely be back.
PS Check out the retro pics on the wall. I especially love the ones advertising hot dogs for 15c and burgers and chips for 50c (I presume USD). Does anyone remember those prices? Just a distant...
Read moreOne of my top cafe's to frequent, the Waffle's are my all time favourite here, unlike many other cafes they make them fresh in store rather than premade reheated ones. The batter is light and fluffy while still being crisp on the outside. My staple choice is the Broadway which comes with whipped cream, berry compote and Maple Syrup. While sounding straight forward, the tartness of the compote and cream really combine quite well with the sweetness of the Waffle and syrup. In comparison the other choices tend to err too much on the sweet side for my tastes.
The other top choice would be their Iced Lattes, at only $5 with 3 full shots of strong coffee it's great value and quite large. Admittedly the roast they use may be a tad bitter for some, it can be balanced out with the addition of a syrup to turn it into a sweeter drink. I'd recommend the chocolate cookie or Hershey's syrup, and for a mere 50 cents it's also quite good value.
While the above refer to my own typical choices, I have tried most of the other items on the menu. The burgers are quite sizable but not excessive, I'd say comparable in size and quality to grill'd if not a tad smaller but just as tasty. The hot dogs and bagels are also great if that's your thing. Sides are generous in size for the price, a main plus side of fries would be too much food for the average person. Split between two the size is perfect. On that note, the sweet potato fries are my pick of the three. They're battered I believe to give them a crispy exterior while still remaining tender, unlike grill'd which end up like soggy pieces of fried sweet potato.
Finally on the note of the venue and service itself. The wait staff are all generally young females every time I've been and they've all had a positive attitude. The place is styled like an old school American diner with the vinyl booths and music, though the age is showing a little in some ways where the seats are torn a little here and there. Still quite pleasant of an environment nevertheless.
Overall 5/5, Still a top choice for me and wouldn't hesitate to recommend...
Read moreOrdered NKB many times through Uber eats. I had issues few times and contacted them about my milkshake not being thick (this an extra $2 per shake) for few times already. As I ordered previously thick shake from them, I knew what to expect, a nice thick cream. When I called, I first got for answer that they put enough ice cream in it, pretty much they can’t do better. Then got offered an voucher for my milkshake, that they can’t deliver, but that I can pick up.
A week after, received a call to tell me that the manager won’t allow me any voucher, as it is uber eats issue, the money goes to them first.
How surprising it is to call a customer to say that they cancel its voucher. How easy it is to use Uber eats as delivery service, but blame them when something goes wrong. What a nice customer service.
I used to order NKB few times per month. I won’t...
