The last time I ate at Green Mango (many years ago) it was very disappointing, but having just moved back into the area, I thought I'd give them another go.
I visited yesterday for weekday lunch with 2 friends. Service was ordinary: despite there being only 2 other dine-in patrons, it was 10 mins before a staff member even noticed us. There was also a reasonable wait on our meals. Even allowing for the possibility that the kitchen was handling multiple takeaway orders, the inattention during our visit was surprising, and as we only had a limited time for our lunch we had to go and find a staff member to pay our bill and ask for the rest of my meal to be popped in a takeaway container (I didn't have time to finish it). At this time we were repeatedly pressed to pay using cash (which wasn't a problem - just a bit tacky!) I was also taken aback that I was charged more for my meal than my friend (we'd ordered the same chicken pad thai dish, the only difference being that I had asked for mine without egg, due to dietary intolerance.) Today I enquired via message re the price discrepancy, and was grateful for a prompt response - apparently the additional cost for my meal was for the takeaway container! I absolutely support the need for small businesses to cover their costs, but the lack of transparency about the additional fee and tone of the response was disappointing.
The meal itself was pleasant without being anything amazing - it wasn't the worst Thai I've eaten, but certainly wasn't the best. It was enjoyable for what it was. I was expecting better for the price.
For now I will try to keep an open mind about Green Mango, but will heed the advice of other locals and next time try the other Thai place a little further...
Read moreNow letâs get straight to business I only eat fried rice when I have Thai food because of this I have had a lot of Thai fried rice in my time. I must say it was good to have a fried rice that didnât taste like all the others. The new flavours were enriching to say the least. My bearded friend Joel, who was a bit under the weather thought some Thai food would lift him out of his ditch. For the most part it did until he saw âthe most beautiful girlâ heâs ever seen walk into firstop. He remarked âHer eyes were painted blue like the skyâŠ.â Joel continued for a while here. Joel got the green Thai curry and it was the a close second to the best thing of his night. The portion sizes were very generous for both me and my buddy Joel and I had enough left over to have a meal out of it the next day as well. All in all great meal/night. Quick last minute addition the young boy who served us was a master at his job give...
Read moreQuite a surprise as the Green Mango is billed as a Thai restaurant although the owners are a Vietnamese-Laos couple and the food shows the subtle difference. Tastes are much cleaner and less sugary while still exhibiting the spice and heat of north South East Asian cuisine.
The coral trout was superb, as was the soft shelled crab with green mango salad. Green beans with tahu was rich and tasty, as was the red lentil balls in Penang curry.
West Ashgrove is hardly a cuisine hotspot of Brisbane so to find such a tasty and exotic meal was quite a surprise. Do yourself a favor as it will be well worth the time to check this place out !
Vegetarians are well catered for and apparently they do a great weekday lunch. Very impressed with both food and service.
A great...
