Went to the BBQ festival over the weekend and Smokey J's was present. I came with high hopes of this place because of the demand on the day, and the long line... and to my dismay I was served this up. You'll see in the picture half the meat is gone, we were sharing with friends, but I think at this point, no one went for a second bite. There were no pickles as mentioned on the menu selection. I can appreciate demand was high on the day, but when you're selling these as "burnt brisket ends" of a pork belly....that are barely cooked?. For $38 it was extremely underwhelming and I can cook a way better pork belly at home. Others nearby had similar looking pork, but what I do know is earlier in the day, the food looked a bit nicer. If I was the owner/chef on the day, I'd be either selling what I'm passionate about and making every serve consistent or don't sell at all, instead of half ass quality. We tried The croc taco also, it was alright but not amazing. This place is all bark, fancy smokers and...
Read moreI recently visited Smokey J’s, and I have to say, the experience was exceptional! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with friendly smiles and quick service. But let's talk about the star of the show — the brisket. It was absolutely delicious! Tender, juicy, and packed with flavour.
What really stood out, though, was the incredible level of service. There were two of us in the group who don't eat pork, and they went above and beyond to ensure that the pork was kept separate from the other meats, which really showed their attention to detail and care for customer preferences. It’s not every day you find a place that’s that accommodating.
Overall, the brisket alone would have me coming back (driving from the northern suburbs), but combined with the excellent service and their thoughtful approach to dietary preferences, I can't recommend this place enough. If you’re in the area, you have to...
Read moreWe had an amazing feed at Smoky J's, my family shared the big 'Family" smokey platter and it was amazing, easily fed 4 people with a doggy bag to take home. The brisket ends were to die for and all the meats just amazing.
I however am the weird outcast in the bunch and a vegetarian, but despair not there are options. The butternut pumpkin was amazing, corn bread to die for and several other items. So if your vegetarian don't despair, their are options here.
We also had the cookie pie for dessert and that was amazing.
So highly recommend this place, get out there, support this new business to be successful to keep giving us a great dining option in the Palmerston/Rural area.
I wish I could add photos but we destroyed the food before we could get some snaps, it was...
