I took Timmy C out to Cooleman court last weekend hoping to catch Kusina’s popular breakfast menu that everyone keeps talking about but instead we were punished for sleeping in and they had already switched over to their lunch menu. My eyes darted around for plan B. It was probably too early for gelato.
Sakeena’s cakes were pretty good and all I wanted was something simple so it was naturally our second choice as they were still serving breakfast. I was surprised to see their prices were rather cheap, although it is probably to accommodate for the older demographic and families in the area.
After we ordered and sat down,I was pleasantly surprised to find our order came within 10 minutes. Until I took a bite…
The ricotta pancakes with blueberries seemed dry, droopy yet under cooked all at the same time. I was trying to compensate the bland taste with the little maple syrup that they gave me (which I had to ask for another portion of). The eggs benedict with ham was swimming in, what I assumed was hollandaise from a jar. Once you scraped away all the excess sauce, it wasn’t too bad until when I took my last bite and I realised I was munching on gritty egg shells. I should have stopped two bites earlier.
A completely disappointing breakfast with unenthusiastic workers and gross breakfast, their only saving grace was their price and speed if you don’t mind sub par food. Luckily their coconut syrup cake is tasty.
p.s. Their coffee was also terrible, I don’t drink coffee but when I had a sip it tasted like an ash tray.
I wouldn’t come here again for brunch (or any other meal?). If you can’t get into Kusina’s, I would suggest Cafe au lait upstairs, even though I haven’t eaten there, the food smells nicer, it’s less noisy up there and has the same...
Read moreTotally fine, but nothing really special. I was on the fence about three or four stars, but I think three is appropriate because:
Poached eggs were hard, not soft. Bacon portion was generous.
Hot chocolate was acceptable (better than you get most places I’ve tried back home in the US!), but other places in Canberra can and do do better.
Arugula/rocket salad greens came out without any dressing, although an attentive staff member noticed it was undressed and brought out some oil and vinegar in a little cup. Greens were fresh, not wilted, which is always nice.
My blueberries pancakes came out hot and well cooked, but had only about a total of ten blueberries between three cakes and they were underripe. They’re apparently ricotta pancakes, so I expected some actual ricotta (like Patissez in Manuka or Beess in Yarralumla), but I guess it must be in the batter. I forgot to ask whether the syrup was real or fake and since I can’t stand the fake stuff, I didn’t taste it and can’t give a recommendation about that either way.
My husband said the coffee was good!
Cute place. A little bit of a tight squeeze with the tables and chairs.
And while we were there, the artwork on the walls was lovely. Always a bonus in any cafe.
Probably won’t return, but if I found myself there for any reason,...
Read moreWent there with a mate after hearing good things about this place. But to say that we were disappointed was an understatement. We had lunch. Two rice meals. My mate got a small and I got a large. Both were the same size. For starters some of the rice was raw and uncooked and the meatballs had no seasoning in them. But the worst came when we tried the creamy asian chicken. It was cooked with way too much msg and made us feel sick. When we tried complaining about this to the staff, all they said was they were going to talk to the chef later in the week without offering any apologies or replacement. They sell these meals for $6 later and it's probably worth that. But there's no way the meals were worth $28 and especially with the MSG overdose. This place is more of a cake and coffee place. But even though they do make good coffee it's let down by the cheap beans that they use. Wouldn't recommend this place for...
