Sticky Rice Thai Food and Bar — Restaurant in Gold Coast City

Being a lover of Thai food, we thought we found a hidden gem with 4.7 stars. 3.5 for my review, here's why:

The service was friendly from start to finish, although the waitresses should keep in mind that with such an open venue, disappearing smiles behind the bar can still be seen. The food came out in a very reasonable time.

We had some wine with our entree of "salt & pepper" calamari with a chilli jam. You could definitely taste the Chilli jam. However, the salt and the pepper were missing, and the calamari was slightly overcooked. The presentation was amazing. However, the flavours were missing.

The coconut rice was nice and probably more than we were expecting. Perhaps owners should consider offering two sizes of rice should to avoid wastage.

The Pad Cha Prawns were cooked nicely, and the flavours were fantastic on this dish and also presented well.

As a lover of dessert and all things coconut, we had to try the banana coconut crusted spring rolls with a coconut cinnamon custard. The bananas were old and mushy, and the crust was tasteless. The custard only tasted like a light coconut cream. Would not recommend this dessert.

Overall, the decor is like a beach thai theme. The venue is small, and when busy, it can be a little loud, especially with their noisy blender in the bar (perhaps investing in a silent blender will help). These guys appear to be trying hard, so perhaps give them a go and a review if they have redeemed themselves...

Edit 2025: Sticky Rice is our standard Thai takeaway…and EVERY time it’s delicious! Our standard dishes: Chicken w Cashews, Pork Belly, Street Chicken, Green Chicken Curry & Thai fried rice with/without chicken. Just LOOOVE the fresh food taste and LOOOVE the friendly service! A different (do I say “toasty”?) flavour to their Thai food. 🥰

Edit 2023: Yet another fabulous meal from Sticky Rice. Perfect Tom Yum Goong, Green chicken curry, Street BBQ chicken with fresh spring rolls and yummy filling fried rice. Guys, we love you! 💕

2021: Our fave Thai both because of their awesome fresh-tasting food and the incredible, attentive staff. We’ve eaten (mainly takeaway) here for years. Monty & Sara are young, vibrant and totally engaged in the business. You’ll see Monty sweating it out in the kitchen, teaching younger staff how to cook great food. Food is always fresh and tasty. Our first visit to this fabulous restaurant. We had no idea it existed as it was above the street level. We have been at Tugun for almost 2 weeks and had we discovered it earlier we would have frequented more. An absolute gem. The staff were so welcoming and professional. The menu whilst small was more than adequate. While we were dining there was a steady stream of people picking up takeaway so that too rates the food. We started with a cocktail which for such a small venue was fabulous and delivered with such aplomb it would rate in any 5 star plus venue. Now the whole idea was to dine and we were not disappointed. We both had entrees, hubby with spring rolls and myself with Tom Yum Goon soup. One word - scrumptious! Our mains - hubby with Massaman Beef Cheek and myself with Red Duck Curry with shared coconut rice - two words absolutely awesome. This absolute find did not disappoint. Our only regret was not knowing about it sooner. Tugun is a wonderful destination and we have been coming for over 50 years and it has still retained that lovely village feel.
