The Nosebag — Restaurant in Hobart

I don’t usually write reviews, but our experience at Coffee Amanti in Sandy Bay was so shockingly negative that it feels necessary.

My partner and I were sitting together, close and comfortable enjoying a quiet moment over coffee — one arm over the other, being affectionate in the most PG way imaginable. Nothing out of the ordinary or remotely inappropriate. Out of nowhere, the owner approached us and started yelling aggressively like we had committed a crime. He claimed it was a “family café” and that we were being “inappropriate” and “didn’t belong here.” We were shocked that a person would be so offended and triggered by two people sitting close and being happy. Tragic that normal human affection and connection was shamed publicly and kindness was treated like contraband. When I calmly asked what we had done wrong, instead of answering, he escalated further and shouted even louder, accusing us of “talking back”, and that we “should just leave.” It was so jarring. He even threatened to call the police… because we kissed? This man needs therapy if he’s that allergic to human affection.

We walked out shortly after feeling shaken, humiliated and honestly a little heartbroken. It was hostile, embarrassing, and completely unprovoked. A café should be a welcoming place for everyone — instead we were treated with aggression for doing absolutely nothing wrong.

After reading some of these other reviews, this man is clearly not suited to the hospitality industry. If you value kindness, respect, and basic decency, I would strongly recommend going literally...

We were visiting from Victoria. We were amazed how the owner made us eggs and pancakes and coffee's and managed to serve walk in customers. Eggs were excellent and he was a fabulous host. Well done. Well...
