Zambrero, we need to talk.
I walked into what used to be my go-to sanctuary of salvation after a long, hard day — a humble burrito shop where rice, beans, and sanity once lived in harmony. But what I witnessed on this fateful evening… I will never unsee.
I watched in horror as the girl behind the counter attempted to roll a customer’s burrito with all the finesse of someone trying to fold a fitted sheet blindfolded. It was less a burrito and more a booby-trapped sauce bomb. I’m talking full structural collapse on first bite. Sauce squeezing out like a horror movie scene, clinging to the foil like it was trying to escape.
Still, I stayed. Loyal. Hopeful. Naive.
She asked if I wanted beans and rice — of course I did. This is Burrito 101. But alas, there was no rice left. So she pulled it fresh from the cooker like it was some kind of victory. I would’ve cheered if it wasn’t all downhill from there.
Then came the lettuce. Or rather, the lettuce hunt. The tray was emptier than my hope at that point, but she scraped every last shredded leaf from every crusty corner and gave me a garnish that could’ve decorated a canapé at a corporate event. I politely asked for more. What I got was a look and a sprinkle. The lettuce, by the way, was commingled with rogue red onion. Not enough to be seen as a threat to most, but my stomach clocked it like a SWAT team on high alert.
Then came the rolling. The punishment. My poor burrito was gripped, twisted, and squeezed like it owed her money. Three months ago this place was my comfort food haven. Now? It’s a danger zone. I wouldn’t feed that burrito to a raccoon with IBS.
