This is always a welcome stop when in Katherine. On a cool dry season morning the locals line up to get their coffee and toasties from this small, but popular little caravan beside the visitors centre. The menu is small, as you would expect from such a small business. But there is love being put in to these humble toasted sandwiches. I had the creamy chicken... Not your typical breakfast toastie, but who sets the rules about such things? At least they don't put tomato on their ham and cheese toasties... The equivalent of putting pineapple on a pizza!
I drink my coffee black, being something of a psychopath, according to Facebook quizzes, but it does give me the chance to see what the coffee really tastes like and see if a barista is burning their coffee or using cheap roasts. Whatever the girls at Black Russian are using as their beans, the blend was smooth and slightly sweet, even before I added my sugar. So I can only imagine that it would be a very palatable flat white or latte as well.
You wouldn't think that a caravan based cafe would do well in a transient town like Katherine. But by doing just a few things very well, Black Russian. We also ordered a coffee each and a slice of the raspberry coconut vegan cake. The staff were pleasant to engage with. The toasties were a different matter though. While the ham and cheese toastie was average, I found absolutely no chorizo in my toastie. There was chicken, bacon and cheese, but no chorizo (!?!) which was quite disappointing. The coffee was excellent, but the cake was simply too gluggy and felt like a gelatinous goop in your mouth. The flavours were just average. Overall, would we eat there again? ...

It may be called Black Russian, but there's no rushin to these brews. Made slowly, these brews are well worth the wait if you want to visit flavour country.
The milk crates were built by an ideas man. Timber seat nailed to the top gives a real good cushioning for your blurter. Alfresco dining in the sun means you can sit and comment on passers by!
The toasties put a smile on your dial wider than Katherine Gorge! There's a few caravans in this park but this one knocks the others out of the...
