Atrocious foodservice practices here! This is quite serious and definitely not an overstatement. So my lovely wife and I are out on a date night, which are sadly far and few between which makes them all the more important. New to the area and decided to try the local club. Joined as members then headed up to the Bull and Barra restaurant. Ordered Veal Schnitzel and Trio of Sliders. No big deal when I received deep-fried 1/2 inch thick Crumbed Steak ( edible but a misrepresentation on the menu of what a "schnitzel" should be) but the worst of this meal was all 3 of the sliders meats (shredded beef, shredded pork and a whole chicken tenderloin) were served cold, not just cool but straight out of the fridge stone-cold. The buns were warm at least. My wife ate the meat from the first 2 sliders but stopped after the first bite of the chicken and then decided to tell me all the meats were cold (the old "didn't want to say anything and spoil our date-night out, my love" ) So as soon as I find this out I asked the server if they were supposed to be served cold, was told no so I asked if she could find out why the sliders were served cold, went to the kitchen and came back apologising but when I asked if the cook told her why the meats were cold I was told "they're still discussing it". Offered to get the wife something else, no not interested. Offered free dessert, no not interested. Told us a few times through the conversation we should have spoken up earlier and something could have been done ( you can't un-do bad kitchen practices and I wasn't prepared to sit there and explain this to the server), I repeated back a few times that sometimes one of the dining couple will remain silent so as not to sour the mood and spoil the night and that all I wanted was an answer as to why the meats were served cold.....No replacement meal, no free dessert, no refund....just an answer! Was lastly told we had the option to "file a report at reception". Well it's not my role to do the catering managers job, they should be aware of all foodservice practices under their control as I once was in the similar roles in my past employment in foodservice as both a head chef and catering manager! One would be led to believe that the catering manager is duplicitous in this practice in the name of cost-cutting in wastage but there are far safer was of doing this than serving reheated meats. So the points here are:- 1) This restaurant serves reheated meats for items on their menu that should be either cooked fresh (such as the Moroccan chicken tenderloin, which is also on the menu as a burger I might add.... there's a few double-ups on their menu, see if you can pick them out ) or cooked on the day and kept at a temperature of above 60 degrees (such as the shredded beef/pork) for that particular service, 2) Service personnel require training in complaint resolution and at the very least up-line the complaint to the restaurant manager for something such as this, instead of repeating "you should have said something sooner". 1st and last time eating here, diners are not only being ripped off in buying rechauffe'd or reheated food when you believe your getting fresh cooked, but also are an unwitting party to the dangerous practice of serving reheated chicken! (Note, posted on other sites as I really feel strongly about this issue and the cowboys that are doing a disservice to the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreSo I decided to give this place a second try after their performance last time because of how good they used to be. That was a huge mistake. I came with a party of six and they put us on two tables, we booked in advance and only just fit in. My brother wanted a Parmi which was $31 for the chicken and $6 for the toppings. With the high cost, I decided I might as well get the full ribs for $50 and use the buy one get one free promotion. My cousin spent $100 on his food and I noticed sauce was free with a meal. When I ordered they charged me $50 for the ribs, $2 extra for the sauce and $6 for the toppings. I asked why my sauce was extra and they told me it was only free with the Parmi. I asked her to remove the sauce from the ribs and add it to the Parmi (not sure why she didn't do this in the first place). The cashier was annoyed with me for asking. Then I asked why the toppings for the Parmi weren't included in the buy one get one free. They told me they stopped doing that. Why? It's part of the meal and they used to do it anyway what changed? None of this even bothered me until afterwards. When I got my ribs they were tiny, smaller than any of the meals on the table and looked like dog food. I had replaced the coleslaw with extra chips but I never got the extra chips (someone else ordered the same thing for comparison). I pointed this out to the server and asked if I could replace my meal with a cheaper one. They told me no as it was but one get one free and left as I was talking to them. My whole table was shocked. Every one of us works in customer service and have never seen such poor service. After waiting 10min for her to return I started explaining it again to a different server as I had no idea if the other server was coming back. Then she appeared out of nowhere with extra chips. I explained again that I wanted a different cheaper meal. She argued that as a regular I should know the quality of their food and expect as much. She literally told me to expect small portions and bad-quality food. Finally, she agreed to replace it. While waiting for my replacement I saw that a steak ordered by of our members was not rare but uncooked, raw. Two other members who also got Parmi said it was like eating a reheated frozen chicken from Coles. 15 minutes after everyone was finished my food came. Everyone who ordered Parmi couldn't finish because it made them feel sick. I asked them for a to-go box as everyone else was done. The box they gave me wasn't large enough to fit the food. I told them about how everyone felt about the food and they told me they do order in pre-breaded frozen chicken to reheat. The same chicken they charge $31 for plus $6 for toppings. In the end, we spent nearly $200 for horrible service, horrible food and a waste of a night. Want a better time, value or food? Go anywhere else and again this is a shame, I used to be a regular and started going less and less as the cost and quality became increasingly worse. Here's hoping they get back to anywhere close to the quality they used to provide. For now, they lost at least 6...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBull n Barra is located behind the Beenleigh Tennis centre on Alamein Street. It's a typical run of the mill suburban club where you sign in, there are pokies and a TAB and it all smells like stale beer.
The restaurant is located upstairs, if you're disabled or in a wheel chair you'll have to use an electric stair chair to get up there as the lift is currently broken.
The entrance is a little confusing with no signage telling people where to wait for service so you're kind of just standing there waiting for someone to notice you.
Thankfully it wasn't busy so we only waited around a minute before someone came out. We were shown to our seats, no mentions of any specials or what the nights fish or curry was, you have to ask at the counter. There is no table service here, you need to order from the counter and also there are no cocktails, just basic spirits, tap beer, bottled assortments, wine and soft drink. Don't ask for a drink menu, we were told there isn't one.
Food ordering is pretty simple but make sure if you're there before 6:30pm you get the second meal for $5 as that's an amazing deal.
We ordered a meat lovers pizza, which was generous in toppings and crisp. The kids meal, a cheeseburger and fries which had seen better days and the adults ordered the 400gram rump and the rump and ribs. Both steaks were ordered medium rare and actually came out medium rare which was a big surprise as steaks are always a bit hit and miss. The ribs were well cooked and pulled away from the bone nicely but weren't basted in sauce, it was simply plopped on top after cooking and it tasted like a run of the mill store bought BBQ sauce.
The only bad comments we had about the adult meals were the steaks being put on top of the chips which made them bloodied and soggy and they were unseasoned or barely seasoned which made them icky and the salad didn't look house made but one of those mix salads from woolworths, regrettable amount of dressing made it hard to swallow.
And just a quick note... I'm not sure who told your waitress that Hollandaise sauce and Bernaise sauce are the same thing but they aren't. They might come from the same base sauce/family but they are seasoned completely differently and barely taste the same, so to be told that when we knew differently was extremely disappointing as hollandaise is advertised...
