Disappointed. I ordered the large chirashi sushi for lunch for $16 and although was adequate, it lacked imagination. The sashimi slices were very thin, and I think the large portion just meant more rice. There was salmon, a couple of tuna and kingfish pieces, couple of thin tamago slices and an avocado which I thought was out of place. Wished there was more variety (eg unagi, salmon roe, grilled tuna/salmon, etc)… Also I witnessed an old lady order take away who was frustrated with the wait time that she requested a refund. I believe the customer is within their right to do this and the business should respect the decision, but instead insisted her to wait and advised her order was coming within minutes. I found this uncomfortable and unacceptable.

I recently visited this small Japanese restaurant, and I was really impressed with the quality and value! Despite its size, the menu offers a great variety of dishes. The sushi was particularly outstanding—generously filled with fresh ingredients, especially the salmon. I was surprised by how much salmon they gave compared to other places. The best part is that the prices are incredibly affordable, especially considering the quality of the food. It seems like they've changed owners recently, and I'm happy to say that the new management is doing a fantastic job. Highly recommend it for anyone craving delicious sushi at a great price!

I bought sushi in the past from this shop, they are ok. Today, I ordered a Niku Ramen with beef, the ramen was made from instant noodles (I saw it while waiting for the food) and with beef from yesterday's leftover. It tastes terrible. The service is really bad as well. That will be my last visit to this shop.

Asukatei is a hidden gem located on Whitehorse Road in the bustling suburb of Balwyn, Melbourne. Specializing in authentic Japanese cuisine, Asukatei offers a range of delicious dishes that will transport your taste buds straight to Japan. The menu at Asukatei features a variety of sushi and sashimi options, as well as cooked dishes like tempura, teriyaki, and udon noodles. One of the standout dishes is the melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu beef, which is cooked to perfection and served with a side of fluffy rice. The sushi at Asukatei is also a must-try. The fish is fresh and expertly prepared, with a variety of creative flavor combinations that will surprise and delight your taste buds. The restaurant also offers a range of vegetarian options, making it a great choice for anyone with dietary restrictions. The decor at Asukatei is simple yet elegant, with traditional Japanese artwork adorning the walls and cozy seating arrangements that make it feel like a true izakaya. The staff is friendly and attentive, providing excellent service throughout your meal. Overall, Asukatei is a wonderful spot for authentic Japanese cuisine in Balwyn. With its delicious food, cozy atmosphere, and excellent service, it's definitely...

Ordered tempura prawn handroll($3 each) and, previously, tonkatsu bento ($12.50 lunch special). Both great value for money and tasted fantastic.

Bento has a very generous serving of side dishes all of which are all tasty. Definitely my go-to if I have time for sit-in.

Warning that sushi has a lot of the glutinous rice which I thoroughly enjoyed but may not be ideal for people watching their carb intake.

Often, handrolls are not displayed but are made upon request, which means non-immediate service but results in some nice, fresh, hot sushi especially for tempura.

Seaweed is given separately (to maintain crunchiness) so customers have to roll themselves which is both a novel and potentially messy experience.

Enjoy complimentary tea or any of their well-priced cold drinks. Will be back when looking for convenient and cheap eats. Only issues are meh-worthy service...
