The Mala family began their journey in Melbourne’s coffee scene five years ago, when they opened Bean + Gone Espresso. It’s an appropriately placed coffee shop on the corner of an intersection, that you can drive into, for grab and go style coffee and nourishments. A blessing for those who are short on time and start work early, considering they open at 6am each day. Following its success, the oldest son Tim decided to open a second site just down the road; this time creating a café onsite offering the full dine-in experience. Its name, Poco Poco, is indicative of his quest to showcase just a small slice of their ethos, given that ‘poco’ means small in Spanish. “Since our cafe is a little part of what we offer, we consider it a little something extra for our customers. If we can positively impact just one person’s day through conversation, then our job is done”, says Tim. The café’s interior features polished concrete floors, warm earthy tones, and lively greenery which softens the industrial feel prominent in the drive-thru warehouse area. Stepping through the door is like taking ‘a little getaway’ and images from Tim’s recent getaways to South America are displayed along the freshly painted white walls. Tim’s love for Melbourne’s coffee culture is augmented by the fact that coffee connects people, and it’s evident that Poco Poco has a wholesome connection with Dimattina Coffee. I was delighted to see a single origin offering from Burundi available both as a batch brew and espresso, which was roasted at Dimattina’s South Melbourne Flagship. In fact, this particular coffee, the Nemba, recently placed 12th in the Cup of Excellence competition. It exhibited free notes of strawberry and peach, with hints of jasmine. The all-day breakfast menu has something for everyone, from Sweetcorn Fritters with Haloumi, Hotcakes with Spiced Ricotta and pecan crumble; and Burgers. Visiting at lunchtime, I opted for the Lamb Salad, serve with quinoa and pumpkin, on a canvas of hummus and dukkah. The flavour fusion had me feeling poco loco!

Really good coffee and the menu has just enough choice for breakfast, lunch or coffee snacks, without being fussy. Excellent for a local bike riding destination. Also has a big round table, centrally located inside the small cafe, to suit a group of 8 or 10 for coffees and a snack. Lovely! Note: this cafe is attached to the Bean & Gone drive through on the Northside of Mahoney's Road.

Bought egg and bacon roll. Absolutely putrid. Egg was revolting but the bacon was even worse. It was brown and stunk. This place should be shut down, its a disgrace. You people should be ashamed of yourselves.

Summer calls for delish frozen yogurt! Loved our visit to bean_and_gone. Enjoyable place to cool yourself down especially during a hot day or summer in general. Such a great place to bring the kids for dessert and lots of topping options for them to choose from. So many frozen yogurt flavours. Consistency is a hit and we loved the creamy thick texture. Use to be a big fan until i started work early. Lining up at 5:30am only 2 staff, 1 making coffee, 1 taking orders. Person making coffee leaving the machine to bring it out, up to 10 minutes however I never chose to to write about this. On the other hand, I drove past in the afternoon and ordered a coffee to find the barista placing the cup under an automatic coffee machine and selected the coffee. I have a Gaggia automatic machine at home but wanted a proper coffee. I have never paid $6 at any Cafe that has far higher overheads but $6 for a coffee that costs $2 at 7 Eleven and theirs tastes far better. I threw it in the bin, so disappointing. Stick to what you use to do best,...
