Read moreA lovely sunny, winter Sunday afternoon spent out at Blackwork Cafe!
It was a little too fresh for us to sit outside so we were placed inside to take in the warm and brightness of the cafe.
Our afternoon started with one latte and one lactose-free cappuccino. Both coffees were placed in front of us before we were even able to read the menu. The Proud Mary coffee beans produced the caffeine buzz and taste we both needed. Neither coffees were burnt or grainy.
After some time perusing their many vegan, vegetarian and regular menu options, we decided on the Lamb Shakshuka and the Truffle Mushroom Benny. (Shakshukas are a frequent breakfast I try to cook on the weekend, so I was curious to see how well mine compared to Blackwork Cafe's haha).
The Lamb Shakshuka (GFO):
Served in a mini wok, the Shakshuka was served steaming hot. While waiting for it to cool down, I took advantage of dipping the toasted Turkish bread into the baked egg - golden egg yolk oozed everywhere!! The braised lamb ribs were cooked to perfection, literally fell off the bone. The base of the Shakhsuka was spicy (not too spicy) but also a sweet topped with sprinkled Danish Feta. It is clearly a better Shakshuka than I could ever produce.
The Truffle Mushroom Benny (V, GF):
Served on a bed on potato hash, this vegetarian twist on the traditional eggs Benedict did not disappoint. If you love mushrooms, then this dish is for you! With king oyster, enoki, shihefi and shiitake mushrooms and truffle hollandaise oozing over the perfectly poached eggs; it was heaven on earth. The sprinkling of pecorino grates helped take this dish to an other level. It is great to find a cafe embrace the plant based movement especially with this Eggs Benedict.
Both dishes were hearty and just what was needed on this winter afternoon. It should be noted that their menu offers more vegan & vegetarian dishes than regular!
Make sure you check out Blackwork Cafe as soon as you can - you won't be...
Read moreEdited: Came back after a long time. Unfortunately I my fried chicken bao was dry and bland, not enough sauce to make it tasty, otherwise it looks amazing and chicken was crispy on the outside. French toast was also dry, there was only a bit of cream to make it better, like where is the maple syrup?? Coffee was tasted burnt. Mint hot chocolate was ok. Appearance of everything is nice but yeah unfortunately the taste wasnt great for expensive dishes. Pulled pork taco was nice. Mild flavour, but nice texture and it all goes well together. Chai latte is nice. Miso egg benedict was not bad. Went again and had chili prawn scramble. While I loved the tempura prawns, i dont know if i like the sauce they use in prawn scramble egg. It came with roti but not sure if the chutney works with roti or is it supposed to be eaten with something else. In general wouldnt order this again, and this time hot chocolate was very sweet!! Nice friendly staff. Always does well with appearance of food, and good variety of lunch. Hot chocolate is rather weak and not sweet. My black squid ink pasta tasted beautiful, just rather small serving for $27.
Finally came here after wanting to go for a long time. Nice cafe across the old cinema. Has modern feel, staff are friendly. Had their brekkie roll that came with waffle fries. It’s been ages since I had waffle fries and this one is perfect! Crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. Also well seasoned. The brekkie roll was beautiful with some beautiful chutney. I was very impressed, this brunch/lunch just hit it bullseye. Matcha latte was ok I think, I cant remember, I think it wasn’t sweet. It is the best cafe I have had so far in Croydon. Also tried their french toast which was nice, love the custard they put on it. Spiced pumpkin latte tasted just like normal coffee, and mint hot chocolate only has faint minty taste. Raspberry crumble cake...
