CBD Bakery, Melbourne, Victoria
Chicken & Leek pie $8.40
Checked out Melbourne's one and only bakery in the CBD district. The bakery has been there for about 30 years and Tony has been running it for the last 6 years. The second baker in a row that supports the baggers.
The presentation of the pie looked nice, it did look a bit shallow though. The lid looked to be baked well, had a small amount of crunch when you bite into the pie and the sides and the base looked to be baked well also.
Moving onto the filling the chicken tasted really fresh, nice bite sized pieces, coupled with gravy and leek it complimented each other well. The gravy tasted amazing and wasn't too rich. Had a nice creamy texture on the palate. Seasoned well. The consistency of the filling looked pretty stable. The serving temp was spot on and at a guess the pie would have held up together. This was a really nice tasting pie. It was the 3rd chicken and leek pie i've had so far and ten times better than a Herbert Adams chicken and leek pie ! The price is up there but well worth the price for a gourmet style pie. Coffee's are pretty decent too.
The bakery has an indoor dining area & a small outdoor dining area too.

Read moreI'm an Aussie from country Queensland but have lived overseas for the past 31 years. I just arrived in Melbourne with my son who has never been here and wanted to tick a few items off our list, like eating a genuine hand made meat pie. I did my research and made a beeline for CBD Bakery. We bought two normal meat pies and two vanilla slices to go but decided to eat them there. Bloody delicious! We then had the pleasure of meeting the bakery's owner and master baker and decided to buy two cinnamon buns (one with coffee and one with vanilla topping and of course with butter in the middle) and some coffee to go. On a rainy and cold Melbourne day, what better way to replace some of the energy expended than a hot meat pie and some sweet delights, washed down by some strong black coffee. It's worth going out of your way to try the amazing range of bakery items...
Read moreWalking into CBD bakery is like walking into a shitty 1990’s time capsule. The radio plays smooth 91.5’s top 40 from 20 years ago. The danishes are adorned with plastic-y white icing, and the meat pies are average and stodgy.
The staff are made to wear tacky brown bakers hats, while they re-steam the milk for your coffee. Décor makes you feel as if you have travelled to Wodonga, circa 1992. Not sure if the menu has changed since 1992 either.
Australia’s Best Pie awards adorn the walls, which doesn’t mean much when every country bakery in the country has claim to one.
So I arrival at my final verdict: don’t go here unless you’re craving a soggy egg and lettuce sandwich in a little plastic container, or a 1992 style Neenish tart.
There are much nicer places...
