There are some places that hold a special place in your heart. For years, Co Do in Melbourne was that place for my parents and me—a reliable spot for authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Sadly, our recent visit was a sobering reminder that time can change things, and not always for the better.

Let's start with the Bun Rieu and Bun Bo Hue. These dishes, once brimming with bold, vibrant flavors, were now shadows of their former selves. Bland, uninspired, and utterly forgettable. The salted fried chicken, which should have been a highlight, was under-seasoned and lackluster. Even the fried rice, a dish that's hard to mess up, managed to disappoint.

Service was another sore point. Gone was the warmth and attentiveness we once knew. Instead, we were met with indifference that only amplified the mediocrity of the food. It’s disheartening to see a place you’ve held dear decline so noticeably.

Co Do used to be a staple, a go-to for comfort and quality. Now, it feels like a relic of better times, unable to keep up with the expectations it once set. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but after this experience, we won’t be coming back anytime soon. Sometimes, the search for great Vietnamese food leads you to places you never expected, and sometimes, it takes you away from the places...

Cố Đô has always been my usual go to. The food was yum but I didn't like the service from just 1 particular staff, he was mid 30, 40 ish, curly hair and with glasses on. Yesterday I went there with a table of 7, we just sat down then 2 minutes after he rushed us to order. I told him we weren't ready, may we had 5 minutes or we would call him when we were ready. This is the SECOND TIME, the previous time I went there with the same group, he was the one who served us with the same attitude. Then he came back again to rush us to order, he leaned his body on one of our friend's chair and his face could tell it all, it was like "Please hurry up", my friend just roughly order just so he could go. If we were there late (almost closing time), with a large group, I do understabd that he may need to rush since the kitchen closes soon. But the thing was, we were there at 7:45, they close at 10, we were so so irritating by the way he talked and the way he served. It was my friend's birthday yesterday so I didn't want to ruin her moment. If I had another chance, I'd have changed another staffs, the rest...

Food has always been spot on we’ve never had sn issue with this place the The food has always been spot on But they dropped the ball yesterday. Hopefully it was an isolated incident as it is onevof my favourite places to either get tske away from or even even dining in but accusing a customer oflying sbout a missing dish is one way to lose a Customer Aside from from the dbove the food was great as it always is Check your order before wslking out if you order take away you will not be disappointed in the quality...

Update. Our go to place for Bun Bo Hue(Spicy Beef Noodle Soup). The broth here is not as strong in prawn paste nor as “herby” as other places. They are generous with their toppings - loaded with brisket, sliced pork and pork cakes. Accompanying the dish is large plate of fresh shredded vegetables and bean shoots. It must be said that the broth on most days is consistent - but - sometimes it has little body and flavour and appears to be watered down. Today, it was good. Quick service and food arrives promptly. Well priced serves. Previous Visit. Always busy. Matters not the time of today as service is always prompt and food is always timely served. Ordered Stir Fried Combination Rice Noodles and Crispy Fried Seafood Noodles. The serves were generous and they were tasty. On a hot day, suggest a table in the other air-conditioned room next door as it remains cooler without the heat coming in from the front door.

If food were a superhero, Codo would be Iron Man. I walked in, expecting the usual run-of-the-mill meal, but what I got was a culinary blockbuster. The food? Hot and amazing, like it had just auditioned for a role in a Michelin star movie. The pho was so good, I half expected it to start giving me life advice. The spring rolls were so fresh, I thought they might still be considering a career in agriculture. And the banh mi? Let’s just say it’s the sandwich equivalent of finding money in your old coat pocket – unexpected, delightful, and makes you question why you ever settled for anything less. Service was quick enough to make a cheetah feel inadequate, and the staff had the kind of warmth that could defrost a frozen heart – or at least my perpetually cold hands. Plus, the decor made me feel like I’d been teleported straight to Vietnam, minus the jet lag and questionable in-flight meals.

Co Do in Footscray is undoubtedly a popular spot, but our recent experience fell short of expectations. While the restaurant enjoys a strong local following, the dishes we tried lacked the depth of flavor we were hoping for. The pho broth was disappointingly bland, lacking the aromatic richness that characterizes a truly great bowl. Similarly, the hu tieu tom thit's sauce was watery and lacked depth. It's clear why Co Do has a loyal customer base, but for those seeking a truly exceptional Vietnamese meal, there might be better options in the area. Overall, while the restaurant deserves credit for its popularity, our experience was just okay.
