Fortunes Asian Cuisine - Malvern, Vic Chefs laksa w/ stuffed egg plant, tofu, and bean curd. Fortunes Asian Cuisine is a Malaysian x Chinese restaurant on Glenferrie Road, a shop that’s got a steady flow of Uber eats deliveries coming and going. Because I like my meals hot and I don’t pander to these corporations 30% surcharge for a meal I decided to eat in. It’s the only way - especially for soup. Who wants a joke warm soup any way. A menu with a huge title that said Chef’s Special was thrust in front of me - I was delighted to see a range of stuffed items on offer, something I hadn’t seen on this town before and something that M Yong Tofu in Flemington does extremely well. I ordered the laksa with stuffed things and it came out to my table quickly. Now many things lack colour including my skin pigmentation after a night of heavy drinking but I was quite shocked at the sheer lack of colour in this dish - it was a pasty off white colour (just like me). As soon as I saw the colour of this dish I immediately ordered some samba and dumped it into the laksa as I was almost certain this broth would need more flavour. That was my first mistake - the laksa while not completely flagrant did already have quite the spicy kick to it. Something I wasn’t expecting from a hole in the wall chinese x Malaysian restaurant in Malvern. The laksa contained two types of noodles - a must but didn’t contain much else other than the stuffed tofu. Somewhat of a let down considering competitors add eggplant, broccoli, beans to jazz up their soups. While this wasn’t the most exciting soup a basic elements were there and the stuffed items were something different. However these lacked lots of flavour that could have helped the very basic dish. 🥢🥢🥢🥢🥢 Broth Flavour: 🍜🍜🍜/5 Soup ingredients: 🍜🍜.5/5 Service: 🍜🍜🍜/5 Overall:...
Read moreA no-frills local Cantonese Malaysian restaurant owned by a middle aged couple. Most of the customers come here to get takeaway so they were preparing orders like crazy and didn’t really have time to serve us (not really their fault I know, but didn’t add to the experience). We ordered a combination laksa and roti chanai with curry vegetables. Laksa was a bit too milky and creamy for my liking and the Yong tofu also kind of lacked flavour. I asked for chilli and they only have one type of chilli oil, no Sambal - maybe that was why the laksa was missing a punch. Good thing was that the chilli oil is actually home made and had a kick to it. I think they probably do better in the Chinese style stir fries as I could smell the amazing wok hei coming out of the kitchen... will probably try one of those next time if I happen...
Read moreThis restaurant is understated and a hidden gem. The service is very friendly and quick and the food is all very tasty and good portion sizes. The only downside is that the restaurant needs a revamp in terms of its interiors. The bbq pork is just as good as the Flower Drum in the city, as are the yum char dumpling combination. The duck pancakes are better than the Flower Drum! I've eaten here numerous times now and been impressed every time. Will...
