Read moreThis classic oldschool place changed my dining outlook. I genuinely had not gone out for pasta in 20 years, after working in Italian places in my youth, my go-to choice had always been viet or malaysian, and that was what I was looking for that fateful tuesday in preston.... turns out everything else was closed, and walking down the street I was drawn towards a place that was not just open, but the epicentre of a savoury aroma explosion, which turned out to be the pizza oven, running at full capacity. Inside is full of the full volume version of that aroma, almost too much, but not quite. While the pizzas looked great, and meticulously built by the owner, I had a hankering for a lasagne. However, after asking the waitress, she said the most popular thing was the frutta di mare, and I was immediately into the idea. It did not disappoint. I have been back 3 times, trying both the napoli and the aglio olio versions, and they are magic. It's not generic mix, this is a quality selection of seafood, big pieces, expertly prepared, nothing fried to toughness or dried out, all tender, pasta at correct al dente. And, classic style, if you come later in the night, the pasta water has increased in starch, so the sauce is richer and thicker. Oldschool cannister of powdered parmesan on the table. Truly delightful comfort food, done superbly. The venue is older, and if you luck out you may get a table by the draughty back door, or have to be out the front. The wine on offer will not be something you love, but that's not what you're there for, it's the food. Next trip I will be looking into the other oldschool things they do, all the versions of veal scallopine, and definitely must try a lasagne, but this place is a lock...
Read more⭐☆☆☆☆ (1 out of 5 stars) I’m honestly shocked at how disappointing this place was. I ordered a pepperoni pizza and what I got looked (and tasted) like it had been sitting under a heat lamp all day. The crust was soggy in the middle but somehow burnt on the edges — not sure how that’s even possible. The cheese was rubbery, and the sauce tasted like straight-up canned tomato paste with zero seasoning.
The service didn’t help, either. Our server looked annoyed from the moment we sat down and forgot our drinks twice. When we finally got them, one was flat soda.
To top it all off, it took over 45 minutes for the food to come out, and the restaurant was nearly empty. Definitely not worth the hype (or the price). I won’t be...
