Heartbakes: A Sweet Ride to Port Melbourne

I biked to Heartbakes on a Saturday morning, curious to see if it could top Sebby’s, my go-to for scrolls. The café is small, warm, and friendly—with a bit of a line around 9:30 AM, a good sign!

I tried the Original and Tiramisu scrolls. Instead of cream cheese, they use an original glazed topping, which gives it a lighter finish. The scrolls themselves are soft, chewy, and not overly sweet—perfectly balanced.

So, is it better than Sebby’s? Honestly, it depends on what you prefer as a glaze. But for today, Heartbakes wins it for me. Plus, if you’re in the CBD, it’s super accessible.

Huge thanks to the team, especially Jessica, for the warm and thoughtful service. It’s clear they take pride in their quality and customer care—and it shows in every bite.

Don’t miss this if you’re visiting Melbourne, you can plan it around your itinerary if you’re passing through South...

Well isn't this just the cutest space this side of Bay St? Visiting one of my best friends in her new neighborhood and we managed to steal away an hour or so for a long overdue catch up. It was a quiet afternoon but that didn't show in the speed of the service, nor it's warmth - both of which were plentiful. Apart from the hoon-mobiles letting everyone know how big their engines are (ahem) it's a quiet location, with lots of outdoor seating beyond the tiny dining area inside. Their tea range and presentation was the perfect accompaniment to our non-stop conversation and I almost felt like a local. They do make the best chocolate chip cookies (my daughter being the lucky recipient of a very thoughtful Auntie Ally) and thanks to the aforementioned aunt we were also able to taste their morning savoury muffins which apparently require strategic planning and an alarm clock to obtain. Heart...

Came here to try the cinnamon and tiramisu scrolls after hearing great things about the place. We thought the scrolls were just fine, not as outstanding as we were expecting. The flavours of the cinnamon scroll were quite basic/standard. It was topped with a sugary glaze. I’d describe it as a “gourmet” version of a cinnamon scroll from your local bakery, but it didn’t blow us away. The tiramisu scroll had a tastier glaze, but there didn’t appear to be any filling between the layers, so the flavours were quite one dimensional. Overall the scrolls were quite soft and fluffy, with a generous amount of gooey glaze on both. I get why people like it, but I was hoping for more complex flavour profiles that I unfortunately didn’t get. The coffee we ordered also tasted a bit flat which didn’t help. Service was great though despite the cafe being really busy, which we...

Big, fluffy and delicious cinnamon scrolls, it has a nice crust on the edges. The scrolls are soft, warm and tasty, the frosting tastes more like a sugar glaze, though (no cream cheese on top) **update: We came back for the second time and finally understood why some people say the icing tastes amazing while others find it just sugary, it really depends on whether it’s reheated or not! The first time, the staff reheated ours and the glaze just tasted like icing sugar, with no hint of cream cheese at all. This time, we didn’t reheat it, and the icing had a much better cream cheese flavour and texture. The icing definitely leans on the sweeter side, more icing sugar ratio than the cream cheese but their cinnamon scroll is absolutely delicious! :)
