I have been visiting this restaurant once a year, every year for the past few years. Was at Machan on New Years eve for a family dinner; and once again it served us the best Indian food Melbourne can offer. Reason I say so has the following reasons :
a. This Indian food is authentic and has not been altered to suit local Australian palate. Barring a couple of places in Melbourne, all the Indian restaurants have modified and added spoons of sugar spoiling the taste and spirit of Indian Food.
b. The Temperature and Crispness of Nan is an ultimate test that an Indian restaurant can be put to. Limp, partially raw and Cold Nans are the worst thing a guest can be offered. We were offered Steaming Hot, Crisp, just out of Tandoor Nans which takes the pleasure to the next level.
c. The quality of food was excellent. Butter Chicken was better than what it is in Amrirsar. Right amount of cream; and not an unnecessary bath of Cream and Butter we see at places that are a shame to Indian food. The chicken was fully cooked and succulent, with impregnated marination standing testimony to the care taken during preparation. The Malai Kofta was an excellent amalgamation of spices with Cottage Cheese; with heavenly aromatic accentuation of Chef's culinary skills.
d. Dal Makhni is truely one of the most complex things in an Indian restaurant. This Lentil preparation has to draw a delicare balance between tenderness of different qualities of Lentils used; all of whom take different times and methods to cook. It is quite difficult to find a well cooked through and TASTY Dal Makhani in Restaurants; but Machan seems to have nailed it; this time and everytime.
e. The only downside was being offered normal temperature water on a 40 degree Centigrade hot day; which was immediately changed to Ice Cold water by the owner. Overall, a 5...
Read moreMy partner and I went here for a local date for our anniversary. I had been here before years ago remembered the food was good but couldn't remember much else.
We were greeted by the owner with a smile as were seated. The menu had a lot of options including vegetarian options. We picked the pretty stock standard butter Chicken, lamb Roganjosh and beef korma with a side of garlic naan as well as two spirits from the drink menu.
When my gin and soda arrived I noticed less bubbles than expected and after a smell I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was because there was a lot of gin. My partners whiskey on the rocks was the same, a good at home pour which normally would be charged at a double shot rate price (but it wasn't).
The food was all VERY nice and we both left quote "the fullest we have been since Christmas".
All food was served with a smile and the owner real did go the extra to ensure we both left full and happy. Would recommend to anyone. Lovely...
