Small joint, bookings are recommended. Great menu but stingy place in general.
This is the third instalment of my Gami trilogy, and it falls short of the Carnegie one, but is still better than the bad guys over in Fountain Gate.
I don’t appreciate that this particular location charges extra for a takeaway container, when other Gami franchises don’t. My idea is simple: If you run on deliveries as well as dine-in, do you charge your UberEats/DoorDash/Menulog customers extra for the packages their food will come in? No. Therefore, why charge paying customers who paid for every morsel of their food the same way people on those delivery apps do. Even if these delivery apps hike their prices to cover these overheads, what explains the fact that this Gami is the only one I’ve been to that charges for takeaway containers, as opposed to the two other locations I’ve been to?
This is a cosy joint, which is spinning it lightly. Probably only room for a maximum of 20 guests, inside and outside, so book ahead if you don’t want to wait.
As I’ve said with my other two Gami reviews, the menu is extensive and there is something for everyone.
I found the boneless chicken slightly overcooked. And the tteok-bokki was large but not flavoursome enough. PSA: It’s not just a bowl of tteok-bokki when you order it. It is probably only 5-6 pieces of the rice cake, which is mingled with noodles and tofu and an excessive amount of onion (and I like onion). Bit of a weird mix and I would’ve preferred only the rice cakes, sauce and cheese but that’s just me. It stayed hot for a while though, which I liked.
The shoestring fries for the “cheese snow” style were ok, but the orange cheese powder tastes overly processed - as if you’re huffing a sachet of Kraft mac & cheese dust. I don’t imagine or hope that this orange stuff stays on the menu for long.
I also really don’t love that sauces cost $2.50, because almost every item you get from here needs sauce - particularly the chicken and chips. But this is the price across all Gami franchises, and something I don’t think is going to change.
Overall, not bad and not great. Would rather go to Carnegie’s location, but would rather the Springvale one over the sloppy service at Fountain Gate.

Read moreGami is a well-known chain Korean fried chicken restaurant with several locations around Melbourne. Was never a big fan as I always felt their chicken was slightly too expensive and dry most of the times but as a new restaurant in Springvale it was important to give it a try again before reserving judgement.
We went on a weeknight, and it was pretty quiet apart from a few uber or takeaway orders. We were helped by friendly staff who served us politely and efficiently. The restaurant had a nice colourful interior with some good k-pop music in the background. The sitting area was comfortable, and the restaurant looked modern.
Ordered Galbi Chicken Ssam $49.00 - Part of their signature to share menu the dish consisted of boneless chicken coated in KBBQ galbi sauce with a "Gami twist". The chicken was served with lettuce, pita bread and 3 sauces (kimchi, salsa and hummus). The chicken was well salted, crispy on the outside and thankfully quite juicy on the inside. Surprising everything went quite well together. I had the lettuce with the chicken in a wrap dipping into one of the 3 sauces each tasted exactly how they looked. Repeated this for the pita wraps. This kept the meal interesting throughout. For the price I was slightly disappointed that you had to pay an extra $3.00 for radish which should really come with any Korean Fried Chicken. I also think the price was too high overall for the quantities served

Read moreDo NOT bother with this place. Apparently, on a Saturday night, these people don’t have a manager running the store, so when something g goes wrong, there is no one there to deal with it. Make sure you double check your order, because the always forget to send you your sauces, and half the order is often someone else’s order.
Ordered the gochujang chicken, and received a cup of rice, with 3 small, unseasoned pieces of chicken.
Literally… just 3 plain pieces of strip chicken, and a cup of rice. No sauce. No seasoning. No garlic sauce. Called to discuss, and the woman who answered would barely let me finish a sentence before completely misunderstanding my point, cutting me off, and telling me there was no manager or supervisor running the show on a Saturday night. Avoid...
