When we first arrived we waited a bit to even be addressed, let alone seated. I don't think there was anyone in charge. The guy behind the coffee machine then took our name and asked us to move back to wait toward the door. We could not wait at the door as it was busy and people were trying to get in and out. It was squashy indeed.
We were seated promptly in the mid-section. The music at the front was loud so I was glad we were not seated there thinking we would get somewhere quieter. This was not the case as it was busy and noisy. I could hardly hear my friend sitting opposite. The place was very busy. There were a lot of staff floating around and they looked 'lost' - is the best way to describe it.
We were asked if we wanted to order a meal and said we needed a couple minutes. We looked at the menu and there was no catering for vegans and very little for vegetarians. Many of the dishes had some wheat involved; whether it be bread, croissants, wrap and I'm not a fan of highly processed wheat. They used the popular term"smashed" for their avocado which seems to be the flavour of the month for mashed avocado. It feels like a copy and paste for many cafes. So, given the menu didn't really cater to us, they missed out on two paying meals. I was going to ask what the soup of the day was but when I saw the price I figured it wasn't even worth asking. Soup for around $14 - $15 - you're kidding right? The waitress never came back to see if we were ready to place an order.
On the whole, would not go back there and that was the first time I had been. Prefer somewhere where they value their customers, treat them more respectfully (not hard really), cater to those of us that do not wish to eat dead animals and where I can talk (which was the point of catching up with friends).
I don't recommend this cafe.....try Now And Then in Kew. Completely...

Read moreGreat coffee, delicious matcha and chai lattes. As a builder, I normally get the coffees for our skilled trades here, as our developments are nearby in Balwyn. The coffee is made from excellent quality beans and is consistent every time.
Today, we had the Pony Benedict and just a brownie as we weren't feeling hungry
The Pony Benedict was unctuous and delectable, with the fatty pork belly delivering on taste and flavour - comforting and yummy. The amount of meat is generous and the pork is of good quality. You can taste the different cross sections of meat from the irresistible fatty cuts to the meatier portions. The poached eggs and croquet combine nicely to give a trifecta of flavour. Would recommend.
The brownie was rich, densely delicious and special. Sweet, slightly bitter flavour and some sour notes. This is the kind of brownie to have over 30 mins of chatting and drinking their delicious brews.
I highly recommend this place. It is a true hidden Gem in Deepdene. Do give it a go and see for yourself. They are always consistent and the...
