Being a chef for almost 20 years in many cuisines, including Chinese, I believe i have great knowledge of good food and even better, the chefs respect for food when I eat out, and this is one of them!
Being a previous business owner myself, I know it can be tough so I like to help out local businesses that deserve the credit for doing things well. So I'm writing this review.
My wife, being Chinese, is fussy when it comes to Asian food outlets but we decided to try one of our local eateries with some friends, Studfield Dumpling House, especially after seeing how busy this place can get for lunch and dinner most days of the week.
We arrived at 6:30PM on Monday night. Most tables were full which we expected, but accommodated us promptly which was great. The place is clean, service is great which is a must for me.
Menu selection is fantastic for the pricing to size ratio with a lot of dishes on offer from your traditional, what to expect dishes eg. Lemon chicken, wonton soup to the more out there fried pork intestines with chilli, which is actually worth a try if your game enough.
The standout here, as the name suggests, are the dumplings. Wow! wow! wow!. Nothing more to say... Really, as good as it gets. A MUST TRY!
So we tried a few dishes..
Pan-fried pork dumplings - Amazing in every way, thin skin, perfectly flavoured filling.
Spring onion pancake - Tried at a lot of places. Most places pan fry these guys deep-fry but not oily what so ever. Best way to explain the taste, savory doughnut with hints of saltiness and spring onions.
Braised beef brisket with potato - Rich sauce with complex flavours, definitely slow cooked and extremely tender beef chunks with background flavour of Chinese five spice.
Fish fillets in pickle broth - Good flavoured fish soup, absolutely huge serving, with bean shoots, szechuan peppercorns, coriander, pickled mustard greens, pickled green chilli. Little bit of spice, great for sharing.
Fried pork ribs with chilli and garlic - This was my fav dish of the night. Not for the faint of heart, when it says chilli... IT'S GOT CHILLI!. This dish was spicy, I like spicy food, this made me sweat, could have been because it was fairly humid that day but was worth the sweat. Extremely crunchy coating, tender pork in the middle, salty little chunks of fried shallots. The pork was coated in maybe a curry or turmeric seasoning before coating and frying. Must be the chefs secret. Never seen before. Great flavour.
Stir-fried veg selection with tofu - Just a standard dish, as what you would expect from most Chinese restaurants.
Overall, great experience for local Asian cuisine. Attention to detail was consistent even during a busy service period, which in my experience usually causes chefs to take shortcuts to get the food out on time. Didn't happen here. All food was out within 20 minutes....
Read moreThis was such a great find. I was craving dumplings but the one I frequent was close on that day. I went to Google Maps and checked the nearest dumpling house and this one was recommend. Both their pan-friend pork dumpling and juicy pork dumpling is delicious and has enough juice when bitten into it. Their chili sauce has a bite, which means they do top up their chili oil often. As usual the chili oil and dumplings were a perfect combination. The fried pork with rice very generous serving. The price is very friendly. It's a popular spot because a lot of customers were coming in as the night drew and a lot of takeway being waited on. Found a hidden gem within Wantirna South. Staff are nice and always...
Read moreA quaint little restaurant in Studfield Shopping precinct. Very clean and attentive staff and food is usually very delicious. I have been couple of times and find their food very consistent. Their dumplings are good but could be better and juicier. However, their simple vegetable or mixed fried rice is amazing. Another dish which is my absolute favourite is "Stir fried chicken with chilli & pepper". It's spicy and loaded with flavour, only downside being has quite a bit of MSG to bring out that taste. I know many are reluctant to try msg and even I used to avoid until when I realised that there is no evidence of research to conclude msg is harmful. So...
