Bbq and Sushi train restaurant. I went to the bbq section. First of all gorgeous view overlooking some of the city. Recommend asking for a window seat, and maybe a sunset timing. Very romantic vibes if you’d like. Weeknights are generally more quiet, so better for a weeknight date night, or small gathering for friends. The venue is very clean and there are always staff going out and about, so it’s very easy to flag down someone for an extra napkin, a refill on water, or a takeaway box for your leftovers! As for the food, we had the fresh oysters, agedashi tofu, and the Chef’s selection of the graded 9 beef bbq. Our table was overflowing with food, but somehow we got through it with a party of 2. Gorgeous presentation. The agedashi tofu was an interesting take. Did not taste like Japanese agedashi tofu. Large portion, with quite a bit of thick sauce. Felt more akin to a tofu stir fry. The oysters tasted fresh, which was delightful-however the seasoning felt overly complicated and didn’t complement the oysters very well. The soft shell crab salad was nice. Nothing too special. Quite an overall acidic flavour, and the crab was over salted. Top two dishes were the salmon sashimi (super fresh) and the seafood miso soup. Absolute favourites. The grade 9 beef was nice, however for some reason, there was a sweet marinade that the pieces of meat were all coated in. This impacted the quality of the meal in 2 big ways. 1) High graded beef shouldn’t be marinaded, as you lose the ability to taste the quality of the beef. 2) The sugars in the marinaded caramelised very quickly, which meant there was a lot of charred residue on the grill (had to clean between each piece of meat being cooked). Also the oyster-blade was not cut evenly, so we had some uneven cooking. Very enjoyable cuts otherwise, however unfortunately ruined by some questionable decisions on the prep chef part. We paid 180$-without drinks, so be prepared to shell out a bit. Overall not worth it’s price.

We attended the 2024 New Year’s Eve dinner and rooftop firework event. It was $110/per person and included bottomless drinks (the usual beer, house wines and sparkling) and three course meal. Food: Entree was good - the miso butter king prawns was delicious and the raw food was fresh too. The main was Japanese BBQ which was the highlight. It was plenty of meat for the price and it was good quality. Especially the ox tongue, one of the best I’ve had from BBQ. The fish cod was surprisingly flavourful as well! It comes with 1 free rice too. The dessert was rather interesting - a mix of fresh and dehydrated fruits and some sort of minty apple turnover/pastry. A lot of tables left their dessert untouched. Service: a special shout out to the lovely Japanese guy who served us for the night. We were the table right in front of the Dj. He was very attentive, and always made sure our drinks were topped up. We didn’t get his name but I hope he sees this! You made our New Year’s Eve dinner! Atmosphere: they had cute balloons and a Dj playing throughout the night. Towards midnight, they dimmed the lights and people started dancing which was good atmosphere for a restaurant. You can see some of the fireworks from the windows but don’t expect the full view. Overall really good value for New Year’s Eve in Melbourne city and would recommend if they run it again next year. (Also a tip: plan your way home appropriately as the flinders station was so crowded)

Tetsujin offers both Japanese BBQ teppenyaki and Sushi train (which can also be ordered a la carte). Their sushi options compared to other places are a little more costly, but the quality is better. That being said, there is sometimes inconsistencies with the flavours of the rolls, for example, but I guess that also depends on the sushi chef that made the dish. Overall their hand rolls are a must, particularly the soft shell crab in my opinion! As for the teppenyaki, I really enjoyed all the marinated meats that they offer. The wagyu beef ranges from the amount of intramuscular fat (as always) and even their lowest grade is quite tender and flavourful. Their pork.belly set is a must try! Offering 8 types of marinated pork, it really is an experience as each piece has a different flavour profile. If you're like me and like trying different things, this platter would be the one for you, and it comes with soup and rice. It's not cheap for sure, but the quality of the food can justify it. That being said, some of the beef cuts are average, for example the ox tongue, and for some of the marinated beef I felt like you can mainly taste the marinade and less so the freshness and quality that can shine through simply from the meat itself. Nonetheless, a great place for japanese BBQ! Careful though, your clothes are bound to smell!

Very disappointed, would not recommend

This was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had. Both the food and service were far below expectations.

Food: Overall, the food was overly salty—especially the sukiyaki, which was nearly inedible due to the extreme saltiness. No water was provided throughout the meal. The foie gras was still very cold when it arrived at the table. The rice was undercooked with a poor texture. What made things worse was that the actual dishes looked nothing like the pictures on the menu. The portion of foie gras was also very small.

Service: The service was chaotic and poorly managed. We were only informed that sea urchin was out of stock after placing the order, and were asked to reorder. Even after confirming our order three times, some dishes never arrived. We ordered four drinks, but only received three—despite reminding the staff twice, the missing drink was never served. Food came out extremely slowly, but plates were cleared very quickly, making us feel rushed.

We also ordered BBQ. At first, the sauces were on the table, but midway through, a staff member inexplicably took them away. When we asked why the BBQ sauces were missing, the server insisted we hadn’t ordered BBQ—when in fact we had. They eventually brought the sauces back, but it made us question the hygiene and handling of those items.

Overall, the entire experience was frustrating and disappointing. The whole meal for 4 people was $350. Poor food quality, disorganized service, and a complete lack of professionalism. We will not be coming back, and I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I sincerely hope the management takes customer feedback seriously, rather than continuing with such...
