Third visit

This has to be the best cafe on the peninsula, surely. It’s very nicely fitted out and has lovely food and drink offerings. They seem to do everything well here. We had the breaky wrap today. We both went nuts over the thing. It’s magnificent. Super flavours of egg, bacon, tomato relish and avocado. And all wrapped in an utterly delicious fried wrap. I don’t know how you could do this better. It was a decent size for a start and just so absolutely delicious. Soooo, the breaky wrap, the throwaway snack that’s served pretty basically in most places is turned into a near artform here and all for $18. We got our coffees towards the end of the meal. I thought it might be a letdown but instead it was absolutely delicious and every bit as good as a good Melbourne brew. Brilliant, guys, you are at the top of your game

Second visit

We came here for lunch with friends today. We all loved our meals. I had porridge which was delicious and beautifully presented. I had a berry smoothy too which I loved as well. My wife had the chicken Caesar salad and adored it. Our friends also loved their dishes, avo smash and the Korean chicken burger respectively. It was a hot day and we also had a couple of excellent iced lattes. The service from the very young staff and one older server was delightful.

First review

Love this gorgeous cafe. Rosebud is a curious place these days. It’s clearly in transition. The Hideout is the best cafe in the area and the best or close to the best on the peninsula on what I’ve seen. It excels on every level.

They’ve nailed it here. The cafe has a lovely attractive but low key street presence, a seductive and tasteful internal fitout with a hipster influenced Moroccan theme, superb food and coffee at very reasonable prices and friendly and efficient staff. I’m not sure you can do it ant better than what they are doing here. If this cafe was in any of the fashionable inner suburbs - Northcote, Fitzroy, Richmond - it’d be busy all the time.My eggs a la mere here were perfect. Lovely to look at, superbly cooked and delicious in every way bits a terrific dish. My coffee was perfection too.

Do not miss The Hideout. ...

I don’t usually write anything but positive reviews, however this is in hope that this helps promote change within this business & the service it provides.

We were waiting for around 5 minutes at the counter to be served (with two little ones 6 & 2) and within this time, my children became a little restless & well, this is not allowed here as it appears (this is meant to be a child friendly cafe... given the cubby house & area / toys provided - this is what I googled as I’m well aware kids & cafes don’t always mix)

We were greeted by a blonde waitress, who took my order however almost scolded me for not knowing I needed a table number (a small sign would be helpful here as it was my first time)

This staff member then continued to scold my children (who were doing nothing more than a bit of fidgeting on the spot, any kids who are waiting in one place, in anticipation for a cubby house / babycinos for more than 5 minutes would)

“Now you stay still! You might bump someone” her words were cold & rude.

Well, that’s my first & last time in your business.

Approach the parent & perhaps & say “hey, I’m worried that there may be a hot drink spilled, would you mind please asking your kids to stand really still? as this has happened before” Would have been a much better approach!

The staff were hurried & it felt like they were annoyed that they had to serve customers?

The decor doesn’t match the internal vibe & from the other reviews I can see, unfortunately I’m not the only one who...

At first glance, The Hideout Eat Drink Play appears to be a small café, but stepping inside revealed a surprisingly spacious venue with a welcoming atmosphere. There is even a lovely outdoor courtyard, which unfortunately was under renovation during our visit but promises to be perfect for sunny days.

Despite our large group arriving close to the end of meal service, the staff kindly accommodated us without hesitation—something we greatly appreciated. Our meals were served promptly, arriving fresh, hot, and absolutely delicious. Not a single complaint was heard from anyone in our group. The coffees we ordered afterward were just as impressive—smooth, rich, and perfectly made.

The venue itself was spotless, with the kitchen in clear view and exceptionally clean. The service was outstanding; the staff were attentive, friendly, and professional, making us feel genuinely welcome. It was the perfect way to wrap up our weekend getaway, and we’ll certainly be back again soon. Thank you to the team for such a memorable experience!

What we ordered:

This week’s adventure took me 90kms down the road to Rosebud, which is basically Melbourne’s retirement village with better beach views. The Hideout served up what they call a Big Breakfast, beans, a token hash brown, scrambled eggs that looked like they’d given up halfway through, mushrooms, and of course bacon (because a Big Breakfast without bacon is just an overpriced side salad, and thankfully they got that memo). Now, is it worth the drive from Melbourne? Absolutely not. Unless you really love spending an hour and a half to experience what your local café could have done in 10 minutes. That said, if Rosebud is your whole world, then yes, this is adequate fuel for your daily battle with the seagulls. Service was friendly, coffee was fine, and overall, it’s the kind of breakfast you politely nod at and never speak of again.
