You might know this place as the Vic on Hyde or the Hyde Street Hotel - around since the 1800s it's now under new management and has reopened as the refurbished Victorian Hotel, with a fresh modern fit out and an updated menu. The hotel has 3 distinct areas plus a dedicated function space – although smaller functions are welcomed in all of the other areas.
The open and airy Bistro seats up to 140 guests with a blonde wood fit out, intimate booths, tables for groups and a semi partitioned area for more private dining. Adjacent is a fantastic kids area with it’s own bar, dining tables for families, play equipment and a screen for entertainment. They’re expecting a delivery of new furniture in the near future which will make this an even more enticing for guests with kiddies.
The new menu really has something for everyone – with wine on tap, craft beers, cocktails, mocktails and and full selection of spirits, plus coffee, tea and softies.
The food menu is comprehensive with a good list of pizzas (in two sizes, starting at $13), steaks (all served with chips & salad), & pub classics (parmas, burgers, fish and chips and bangers and mash to name a few). Plus a list of mains such as goats cheese soufflés with seasonal veg and Couscous, crispy salmon with asparagus & broad beans, or seafood paella. They’ve helpfully suggested wine pairing with many of these dishes. There’s also a kids menu (kids eat free on Monday!), a seniors menu (from $8), and a couple of basic desserts.
What we had... #Herb crusted Hervey Bay Scallops, aioli, cauliflower puree and lemon | delicate and tender scallops in a lovely creamy sauce with a delightful golden crunchy crust on the top. #Camarones Al Ajillo – prawns, chilli and garlic served with Turkish bread. | A generous serving of perfectly cooked, tender prawns surrounded by a delicious garlicy broth. We loved the slices of garlic which gave it a real kick of garlic, and the fluffy fresh turkish bread was just perfect to soak up all that sauce. Garlic and prawns – what could be better than that?! #Chicken Parma – house made chicken parma, beer battered chips & garden salad | the huge parma was really tender and juicy with a delicate ham and even though it was completely covered in golden cheese it wasn’t too rich to eat. We enjoy the thick cut beer battered chips, well cooked with a great crunchy texture.
Eye Fillet Surf and Turf – this obviously isn’t a cheap dish but it features a 250g grass fed eye fillet cooked how you like it, plus prawns in a white wine bisque and your choice of sauce. It comes with crunchy thick cut chips and a garden #Sticky Date Pudding – light, moist spongy pudding with a good date flavour – served hot with vanilla ice cream. Pro tip – it’s lovely and absorbent, order extra sauce!
Final Thoughts…. Located in an accessible spot on the main strip of Hyde Street with parking out the back, the Victorian has a welcoming feel, loads of space and a well executed, modern menu. They feature specials & happy hour on week nights, locals night on Monday, trivia on Thursdays and a Sunday roast every week. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the chef is happy to cater for all dietaries. If you’re Northside it’s definitely...

I went to the hotel for Mother’s Day with my family, and would like to give feedback.
I called in April to book a table and specifically asked for the kids room. When I arrived, I was told the booking was for the bistro. This was very stressful for me. Sana was wonderful, and was able to rearrange things so we could be in the kids room.
I use a powered wheelchair. The layout of tables makes it difficult to navigate the garden room, where the bar is. It would helpful if there was a ramp between the kids room and main bistro as well.
I had to ask a member of staff where the accessible toilet was, because there was no wheelchair symbol on the door. The sign indicated it’s a unisex toilet and change room. It was difficult using the toilet, because there’s so little space with the change table. My wheelchair is compact and I can manoeuvre in smaller spaces than most other wheelchairs, however I found it challenging. The change table doesn’t allow for a side transfer from a wheelchair to the toilet. Thankfully, I am ambulatory and was able to step from my wheelchair to the toilet. Most wheelchair users would either need assistance (difficult in such a confined space) or find it impossible to transfer to that toilet.
I strongly recommend having a wall unit mounted as a change table so wheelchair users can actually use the toilet.
The way the door opens from the car park into the kids room is also difficult to get through for wheelchair users.
I downloaded the app, however had to go to the bar to order as there was no option that I or the staff member I approached could see to add grilled chicken to the salad I wanted to order. There was an option to remove, but not to add.
Having to use a wheelchair to get around is difficult. We face many challenges on a daily basis, and are having to constantly fight for accomodations so we can take part in social activities.
Please consider my feedback and making some basic changes to make it easier for us.
The staff were very helpful, and the food was delicious. We will likely come back for further family...
Read moreThis is a honest review. 1.5 stars. Let me explain breakdown below. Ordered few dishes tonight. Cauliflower croquets - crispy yes, but that’s where it stops. Lacked flavour & seasoning. The orange sauce lacked the same. Big 0 Prawn/lobster Roll - Flavour yes. Portion size was a joke for sure. Not even $5 worth of protein mix in total. Taking a Mickey while charging $19.00 Stone baked garlic bread - or should I say pitta beard with humus and parsley chutney. Garlic was clearly missing in action and what’s with tons of bread and rain drop worth humus - really???? The Most DISAPPOINTING DISH OF THE NIGHT - Cauliflower salad. How do you (Victoria Hotel) think charging $25.00 for a salad which is basically bag of spinach, just about cooked cauliflower and few pomegranate kernels is right? And where on earth was DRESSING? Salad without dressing? Would Love my refund on this for sure. Service - Basically no one is interested to smile or provide any info/recommendations or even check on how the dinner is? And please don’t use Covid as a excuse for your sloppy service. Now the positives on why I have 1.5 stars. Chicken tenders - on the point with flavour and seasoning (seems like on chicken dish chef showed up to work!) Clean place with kids play/parents dinner area which is really good feature.
In summary, you got to really pull your weight with taste and flavour or reduce your pricing dramatically to match current taste and state.
Your extremely disappointed and considering never to return...
