To quote Gene Simmons, ‘anyone who tells you they got into pizza for reasons other than girls, fame and money is full of s*”, oh wait, that was about rock’n’roll.
So Thin Slizzy, our hunt for thin crust pizza brought us here, to this unique pizzeria in Collingwood where it’s all about pizza and rock’n’roll; albeit we are old, and we were tired before the muso’s started to play live music (from 9pm). But let’s talk pizza!
But before we do, firstly hats off to Scott and the crew! Scott (owner) is so warm and welcoming (and his crew were on the ball) and such a chill guy. His pizzeria is a direct reflection of him, his love of making pizza and music. We had no idea Scott made pies at Rita’s for a few years before opening his own joint (and giving many in the area a run for their money), as well as being in a band. His pizzeria makes so much sense, and is decked out accordingly, giving off the muso vibe backed by (of course) incredible thin crust pizzas. So yes, service and vibe are spot on! There was also art on display from Naxington, a Melbourne local (Google him), adding a third dimension.
For drinks, Charlene wanted something sparkling, so Scott stepped out, went next door (to the neighbouring wine bar) and brought in a few bottles of some sparkling. Ummm no words, who does this? Tremendous service. It’s not like the venue didn’t have drinks or anything like that, Charlene is just being Charlene and said give me something fancy. Hah. Yes, Scott delivered!
We were going back and forth about what pizza to share, so we though we better eat something while we continue debating, so we ordered the garlic bread and caprese salad, while downing some Spanish Cava. The garlic bread was amazing, crunchy, fluffy, garlic that smacks you in the teeth (as we like it), and a decent size too, perfect accompaniment to the caprese salad. Great way to start, get the appetite going while we settle on a pizza.
We were tossing up between a few (pizzas) before we settled. The options were: Red Hot Chili Peperonata, Metallica, Jamones and, wait for it, Excruciating Pain-Apple (pineapple on a pizza, but not as you know it, more like the pineapple is caramelised/blitzed and forms the sauce on the base). See the photos for what’s on these pizzas, too much to write, but they all sound delish. But we went for was their special on that day because it had nduja, and was appropriately named Totally Nduja.
Nduja is a spicy spreadable pork sausage from Calabria, and it formed the base a long with the tomato sauce. How unique is that! Add some pork and fennel sausage, fior di latte, and some Italian greens and you have this exceptional pizza, full of wonderful flavours and texture, on a thin pizza base (that is crispy, charred right, has bite and chew, and a fluffy crusty edge) that makes you want to slap the table with every bite you take from a slice! That flavour profile worked so well, that we now must buy some nduja for our home-made pizzas. We absolutely loved it.
Next time we visit: no starters, just a couple of pizzas and drinks (as we were full after sharing the Nduja pizza), there are so many options that looked amazing, and knowing the quality of ingredients used, and watching his crew make them, we know that quality is at the forefront of what Thin Slizzy does.
We highly recommend you pay this place a visit and stay for some live music too from 9pm.
Edit 24/10/2024 - second visit
For our second visit to Thin Slizzy in Collingwood, our expectations were sky-high after an incredible first experience. Delightedly, this visit was just as phenomenal as the last.
Starting with the garlic bread and caprese salad, the flavors were an absolute delight. The bread was freshly baked and paired perfectly with the flavor-packed caprese.
The highlight, of course, was the pizza topped with a delectable combination of potato, pancetta, mozzarella, and taleggio, all laid on a sumptuous garlic base. Each bite of the thin-crust pizza was a masterpiece; crispy, with a charming char that could only be...
Read moreAfter 1 visit, it's shot up to my favourite pizza place in Melbourne (which says a lot for this self-proclaimed pizza snob). The pizza is like a brilliant hybrid between Roman, New York and Neapolitan, blending the best parts of each to form a slice that's super thin but holds its structure, crispy/crunchy but somehow still fluffy at the same time. Quite the achievement! It was also consistent across the 3 we had at our table. If that wasn't enough the names of things on the menu are brilliant, the atmosphere, the vibe but also the people working there.
I saw them post about their tribute to Ozzy (RIP Prince of Darkness) but sadly it was ending before I could make it there. I sent them a message saying that, and the champion that Scott is he offered to save 1 last base for me and make one if I could make it in on the weekend. What a legend! When I went in we met, I ate and we had a good chat about music and the pizza. Everyone I spoke to that worked there was just as friendly as well.
Excellent Pizza, beer, music and people with a rock/metal vibe, what more could...
Read moreBoy oh boy where do I get started! I strolled past on an unsuspecting wednesday night and was pleasantly greeted by the most delicious scent of pizza, I lost my free hand will and I just HAD to eat one. I ordered a smashing pumpkin, they were playing good music, the staff were lovely it was a great atmosphere and when it promptly arrived I was not mentally prepared for the chokehold of the delicious treat would have on me that I was about to consume. I was the furthest thing from disappointment. Absolutely exquisite, my senses were tingling like on the 5 gum adds. I didn’t want it to end and I also didn’t want to leave it’s all I want to eat. I quickly developed Stockholm syndrome and I was clouded by the that dream that become of me that is living in their basement in a cage to be rewarded with only slither of their...
